CHAPTER XIV.

CONTINUATION OF OUR SAVIOUR'S PRAYER FOR THEM. --John xvii.

That they may be kept holy.

While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the Scripture might be fulfilled. And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them

through thy truth; thy Word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even

Whom does our Saviour pray for in this chapter? What is the object in his prayer?

What did not Christ do for the apostles alone?

Who were the apostles? A.Twelve disciples chosen by Christ to be his constant companions, and commissioned or sent by him to preach the Gospel.

Whom did he pray for besides ?

How were they to believe on him?

What did he pray that they might be?

In whom were they to be one, or to whom were they to be united?

A. Christ.

What would the world believe in consequence of this?

What had Christ given to them?

For what purpose? What was the world to know?

How has God loved those who believe in Christ?

What does Christ desire for those whom the Father had given him?

For what purpose?

through the truth.

CHAPTER XV.

OUR SAVIOUR PRAYETH FOR ALL THOSE WHO SHALL

BELIEVE IN HIM.-John xvii.

That they may be one in Christ, and eternally happy with him.

Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me, through their word; that they may also be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that thou hast sent 'me. And the glory which thou gavest me, I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one; I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one;

and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them as thou hast loved me. Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me

Where shall they behold his glory?

A. In heaven.

From what time did the Father love Christ?

Before what time then did Christ exist?

How does that appear? A. Because God loved him before the foundation of the world.

Where do you find another proof of this?

A. In St. John's Gospel: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

Who is meant by "the Word?"

A. The Son of God. Who had not the world known?

How has the world not known the Father?

A. It has not acknowledged him as it ought.

Who had not known him? What have his disciples known?

What did Christ declare to his disciples? What do you mean by "disciple?"

A. Scholar, learner. For what purpose did Christ declare God's name to them?

CHAPTER XVI.

What discourse does the 16th chapter contain?

What is meant by remission of sins?"

A. Forgiveness of sins. Where were they to be preached?

Where were the apostles to begin preaching?

Why first at Jerusalem ?

A. Because the terms of salvation were to be first offered to the Jews, and Jerusalem was their chief city, where the temple stood.

Of what were the apostles witnesses?

What were these things? A. Christ's death and resurrection.

What do you mean by Christ's resurrection?

On his Death and Resurrection.

These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses, and in the Prophets, and in the Psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the Scripture. And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day; and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things. And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

Whither was he carried? What did the apostles do? To what place did they return?

In what state of mind did they return?

What was the cause of their joy?

A. That their Master was received into heaven. Where were they continually?

What were they doing in the temple?

What was the temple? A. The great Church at Jerusalem.

What did "their worshipping him" prove?

A. That they were convinced that he was God.
