And the angel answered and said unto her, the Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God, Luke i. 35. Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. For the Father judgeth no man, but hath com. mitted all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even a ey honour the Father. He that oureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him, v. 17-23. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. For as the Father hath

Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him, ix. 35-38. She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world, xi. 27. These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee, xvii. 1. The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God, xix. 7. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh, viii. 3. God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in times past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds, Heb. i. 1, 2. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins, 1 John iv. 10. He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar;

Καὶ διαπεράσαντες, ἦλθον εἰς τὴν γῆν Γεννησαρέτ.

And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.

And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore. And

when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him, and ran through that whole region round about, and began to convey about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was. And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country; they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment and as many as touched him were made whole, Mark vi. 53–56.

Καὶ ἐπιγνόντες αὐτὸν οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου, ἀπέστειλαν εἰς ὅλην τὴν περίχωρον ἐκείνην, καὶ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ πάντας τοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας.

And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;

VER. 36.

Καὶ παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν, ἵνα μονον ἅψωνται τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ· καὶ ὅσοι ἥψαντο διεσώθησαν.

And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.

And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, 'came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole, Matt. ix. 20, 21. For he had healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many as had plagues, Mark iii. 10. And the whole multitude sought to touch him : for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all, Luke vi. 19.

If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day? John vii. 23. And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all, Acts iii. 16. Why do thy disciples a transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. a And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen hands, they found fault, Mark vii. 2. And profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers, Gal. i. 14. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ, Col. ii. 8. Ο γὰς Θεὸς ἐνετείλατο, λέγων· Τίμα τὸν πατέρα σου, καὶ τὴν μητέρα· καὶ ὁ κακολογῶν πατέρα ἡ μητέρα, θανάτῳ rλEUTάTW.

For God commanded, saying, b Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

a To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them, Isa. viii. 20. Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law, Rom. iii. 31.

or his mother, shall surely be put to death, Exod. xxi. 17. For every one that curseth his father or his mother, shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be upon him, Lev. xx. 9. If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you ; and all Israel shall hear, and fear, Deut.

xxi. 18-21. Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen. xxvii. 16. Whoso curseth his father or his mother; his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness, Prov. xx. 20. The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it, xxx. 17.

VER. 5.

Ὑμεῖς δὲ λέγετε· Ος ἂν εἴπῃ τῷ πατρὶ, ἢ τῇ μητρὶ· Δῶρον, ὃ ἐὰν ἐξ ἐμοῦ ὠφεληθῆς, καὶ οὐ μὴ τιμήσῃ τὸν πατέρα αὑτοῦ, ἡ τὴν μητέρα αὐτοῦ.

But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father, or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by

And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye, Mark vii. 10-13. But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye, Acts iv. 19. Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men, v. 29.

VER. 6.

Καὶ ἠκυρώσατε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν.

And a honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.

a Honour widows that are widows indeed. But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God, 1 Tim. v. 3, 4. But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel, 8. If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the Church be charged: that it may relieve them that are widows indeed, 16.

b It is time for thee, LORD, to work: for they have made void thy law. Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold, Psal.cxix. 126, 127. Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my How do ye soul keep them, 129. say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain. The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken : lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them, Jer. viii. 8, 9. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast for

gotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children, Hos. iv. 6. For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts. But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the LORD of hosts. Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law, Mal. ii. 7—9.

This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; b but their heart is far from me.

a Wherefore the LORD said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men, Isa. xxix. 13. And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness, Ezek. xxxiii. 31. For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile, 1 Pet. iii. 10.

angel, that it was an error: wherefore
should God be angry at thy voice,
