16. But their eyes were holden, that they should not know him.

CIX..

He difcovers himself and eats with them.

Ear to the Village come, he still press'd on,

NEar

And femblance made as he'd have further

gone:

;

With an obliging Force they him rerain,
He muft beneath their humble Roof remain
Since far away the Hills project their shade,
And humid Night wou'd foon the World invade:
Ent'ring the House, he not difdain'd to fhare
Their frugal Board, and homely Country-Fare:
He took, he blefs'd, he brake and gave the Bread,
When from their Eyes the mifts that veil'd 'em,
fled:

They faw the well-known Glories of his Face,
They faw and wou'd have rush'd to his Embrace,
But grafp'd the Air, he vanish'd from their fight,
And cloth'd his heav'nly Form in Clouds and
Night.

With Joy and heav'nly Love, and glad Surprise, Either on other fix'd, at firft, their Eyes;

Then thus--- As with us on the Road he came, Did not his piercing Words our Hearts enflame? Nor from th' Apoftles long the News conceal'd, But told 'em how our Lord his heav'nly Form re

yeal'd.

CX.

He appears again to the Eleven and con vinces them.

OW to the under-World the Sun was fled,

Now

And Night her fable Mantle round her spred,
When the Disciples of the Jews afraid,
Clos'd all the Doors and fought a deeper Shade.
Loe in the midft they see our Lord appear,
Who kindly thus accofts 'em- Peace be here!
The fudden fight diftracts 'em all with Fear;
They fome illufive Spectre him fuppose,

Till them his wounded Hands and Feet he fhows.
Why fuffer you thefe doubtful Thoughts to rife?
He mildly asks, Believe your Hands and Eyes!
Senfe cannot be deceiv'd-- Handle and fee,
A Spirit has not Flesh and Bones like me.

Tho' all his Wounds they yet unclos'd perceive For Joy and Wonder yet they fcarce believe. More to confirm 'em ftill, he asks for Meat,

T

And their mean Viands not difdain'd to Eat;
Divine Instruction freely then imparts,

And fills with Light their Eyes, with heav'nly Joy their Hearts.
