CHAPTER XIII.

Abram and Lot return out of Egypt. 7 Because of the disagree ment between their herdmen, they part asunder. 10 Lot goeth to wicked Sodom. 14 God reneweth the promise to Abram. He removeth to Hebron, and there buildeth an altar. [B. c. 1918.]

God reneweth his promise

9 Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: 'if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.

10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD "destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto P Zoar.

6 And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.

7 And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelt then in the land.

14 And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot "was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:

15 For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and y to thy seed for ever.

16 And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.

17 Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.

18 Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, bwhich is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD,

9 With Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and with Tidal king of nations, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings with five.

10 And the vale of Siddim was full of slimepits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and they that remained fled to the mountain.

14 And when Abram heard that "his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan.

15 And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.

16 And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.

17 And the king of Sodoma went out to meet him, after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's dale.

18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was e the priest of the most high God.

19 And he blessed him, and said, & Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth :

21 And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.

22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I1have lifted up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,

23 That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:

24 Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.

3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, fone born in my house is mine heir.

13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety "that thy seed shall be a strange in a land that is not theirs, and shall serv them; and they shall afflict them fou hundred years;

establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, "to be a God unto thee and to thy seed after thee.

Circumcision instituted.

GENESIS, XVIII.

Three men visit Abraham.

10 This is my covenant, which ye shall | Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at keep, between me and you and thy seed this set time in the next year. after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.

11 And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.

12 And he that is eight days old "shall be circumcised among you, every man child your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.

13 He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

14 And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.

22 And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.

23 T And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him.

24 And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was, circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

26 In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son."

27 And fall the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of the stranger, were circumcised with him. CHAPTER XVIII.

15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. 16 And I will bless her, and give thee The Lord appeareth unto Abraham. 2 He entertaineth three a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and 7 she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.

17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, * and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is a hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?

18 And Abraham said unto God, Oh that Ishmael might live before thee!

19 And God said, a Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, d and I will make him a great nation.
