Thus Lions cruelly devoured me,
For bearing unto truth my Teftimony.

I reft in peace, till Jefus rend the cloud,

And judge 'twixt me, and those who shed my blood.

Upon the Grave-ftone in the Church-yard of Balmaghie, upon the Corps of David Halliday, Portioner of Mayfield, Shot by the Laird of Lag, February 1658, and of David Halliday in Glengap, foot by the Laird of Lag, and the Earl of Annandale in the fame year 1685, is this Epitaph:

B

Eneath this Stone two David Hallidays

Do ly, whofe Souls now fing their master's praise.
To know if curious Paffengers defire

For what, by whom, and how they did expire?
They did oppofe this nation's perjury,

Nor could they join with lordly Prelacy.
Indulgence favours from Chrift's enemies

Quench'd not their zeal : This monument then crys.
These are the causes not to be forgot,

Why they by Lag fo wickedly were fhot

One Name, one Caufe, one Grave, one Heav'n do tye
Their fouls to that one God eternally.

Of curfed Claverhouse and's bloody band.
No fooner had he done this horrid thing,

But's forc'd to fay, Stewart's foul in Heav'n doth fing.
Yet ftrange, his rage purfu'd even fuch when dead,
And in the tombs of their ancestors laid ;
Caufing their corps be rais'd out of the fame,
Difcharging in Church yard to bury them.
All this they did, because they would not abjurė,
Our covenants and reformation pure;
Because like faithful martyrs for to die
They rather chus'd, than treacherously comply
With curfed Prelacy, the nations bane,
And with indulgency, the Church's ftain.
Perjur'd intelligencers were too rife,

Show'd their curs'd loyalty, to take their life..

And all becaufe they would not comply

With Indulgence and bloody Prelacy.

In face of cruel Bruce, Dowglas and Graham,

They did maintain, "That Chrift was Lord fupreme."
And boldly owned both the covenants:

At Kirkcudbright thus ended thefe two faints.

His monument to paffengers fhall cry,

That godly Grierfon under it doth ly,
Betray'd by knavifh Watson to his foes,
Which made this martyrs days by murder close,
If ye would know the nature of his crime,
Then read the ftory of that killing time,
When Babel's brats with hellish plot conceal'd,
Defign'd to make our fouth their hunting field.
Here one of five were laid in duft,

To gratify Rome's execrable luft.

If Marabins with molten bullets could

Have reach'd their fouls, thefe mighty Nimrods would
Them have cut off; for could no request

Three minntes get, to pray for future rest.
