Infcription on a Stone in Eaftwood Parifb, lying upon the Corps of James Eagle and John Park, who fuffered at the Grofs of Pailley, for refufing the Oath of Abjuration in the Year 1685,

TAY Paffenger, as thou goes by,

STAY

And take a look where we do lye;
Who for the Love they bare to truth
Were depriv'd of their life and youth.
Tho' Laws made then, caus'd many die,
Judges and 'Sizers were not free,
He that to them did thefe delate, ?
The greater count he hath to make:
Yet no excufe to them can be,
At Ten condemn'd, at Two to die.

So cruel did their rage become,

This may a ftanding Witness be

HE bloody murderers of thefe men

To witnefs 'gainst this nation's perjury.

Infcription on a grave ftone in the Church yard of Streven on the Corps of William Paterfon who lived in the Parish of Cambufnethen, and John Barrie in Evandale, Anno 1685.

HEre ly two martyrs; feverally who fell

By Captain Inglis and by bloody Bell.

Pofterity fhall know they're fhot to death,
As facrifices unto Popish wrath.

Inscription on the ftone lying at Black-wood in the parish of Lefmahego, upon the Corps of John Brown, who was foot by Murray, without fentence of law, Anno 1681, and

buried there in the open fields.

Murray might murder fuch a godly Brown,

But bould not rob him of that glorious Crown,

He now enjoys. "His credit, not his crime

Was non-compliance with a Wicked Time.

Inscription upon a Stone lying on the corps of John Brown, who lived in the Parifb of Moor-Kirk, who was feet dead by Graham of Claverhoufe at his own door May, 11685.

and lies buried there in the open Fields.

IN Death's cold Bed the dusty part here lies
Of one who did the earth despise,

Here in this place from earth he took departure:
Now he has got the garland of the martyr. ·

Upon the Grave stone of David Steel in the Church yard of Lish mahego in this matte.

David a Shepherd firft, and then

Advanced to be King of men,

Had of his Graces in this Quarter
This heir, a wand'rer, now a martyr.
Who for his conftancy and zeal,
Still to the back did prove good Steel.
Who for Chrift's royal truths and laws,
And for the covenanted caufe

Of Scotland's famous Reformation;

Declining Tyrants Ufurpation,

By cruel Crichton murder'd lies,

Whofe blood to heav'n for vengeance crys.

Upon the Grave-ftone of Andrew Hillop lying in Graick-haugh, in Ekdale-moor, being the place where he was foot by Claver houfe and Sir James Johnfton Wefterhall.

Alt Paffenger, a word with thee or two,
Why Ily here wouldeft thou truly know?
By wicked hands, hands cruel and unjust,
Without all law, my life from me they thruft,
And being dead they left me on the spot
For burial this fame place I got,

Truth's friends in Eskdale now rejoice their lot,
Viz. th' faithful, for truth my seal thus got.

In the Church yard of Dumfries, upon the Grave-flone of John
Grierfon, who lived in the parifb of Irongray, and fuffered
January 2d. 1667. is this infcription.

When he condemns thefe hellifh drudges,
By fuff'rage faints fhall be their judges.

Upon the Grave-ftone of William Welsh, in the fame Church-yard, who lived in the fame parifb, and fuffered at the fame time with the former, there is this Epitaph.

A Witnefs 'gainft poor Scotland's perjury
Whofe Head once fixt upon the Bridge-port ftood,
Proclaiming Vengeance for his guiltless Blood.

In the fame Church-yard, on the Grave-tone of James Kergo, whe lived in the parifb of Kier, and was shot dead on the Sands of Dumfries, by Captain Bruce, June 1685. is this motto.

Y bloody Bruce and wretched Wright,

I loft my Life in great despight;
Shot dead without due time to try,
And fit me for eternity,

A witnefs of prelatic rage,

As ever was in any age.

On the Grave-ftone lying on Edward Gordon and Alex M'cubine, execute at the Church of Irongray, at the command of the Laird of Lag and Captain Bruce.

S Lag and bloody Bruce command,...
We were hung up by hellish hand;

And thus their furious rage to ftay,.
We died at Kirk of Irongray:

Here now in Peace fweet reft we take,

Once murder'd for religion's fake.

Upon a Stone lying in a Moor near Lochenkithil, on the Grave of John Gordon, William Stuart, William Herron and John Wallace, Shot by Captain Bruce.

BEhold here in this wilderness we ly;

Four witneffes of hellifh cruelty.

Our lives and blood could not their ire affwage,
But when we're dead, they did against us rage;
That match the like, we think, we fcarcely can,
Except the Turks, or Duke de Alva's men,

Upon three feveral Grave-ftones lying on John Gibfon, James Bennoch, Robert Edgar and Robert Mitchel, who were foot at Ingliftoun in the parish of Glencarn, by Collonel Douglas and Lieutenant Livingston, Anno 1685, are thefe Verfes.

HERE lies a monument of Popish wrath

Because I'm not perjur'd I'm thot to death
By cruel hand; men godlefs and unjust ! 1
Did facrifice my blood to Babel's luft.

Alt Paffenger, tell if thou ever faw

Men fhot to death without procefs of law. Iti We two of four who in this Church-yard ly, Thus felt the rage of Popish tyranny.

Upon a Stone in Tynron Church-yard, lying on William Smith, who being a youth of Eighteen years of Age, was foot at the Bridge-end of Minni-ive, by the command of Sir Robert Lawrie, Laird of Maxwelton, and John Douglas of Stenhouse, May, 1685.

William Smith now here do ly,

Once martyr'd for Chrift's verity.

Douglas of Stenhouse, Lawrie of Maxwelton
Caus❜d Coronet Bailie give me martyrdom.
What cruelty they to my corps then us'd
Living may judge: me burial refus'd.

Upon Daniel Mackmichel, who was shot by Dalziel of Kirkmichael,
January 1685, lying in the Church-yard of Durifdeer.
