abomi nations of that nature. And likewife 1 abhor and deteft all compliance or joining with the enemies of our Lord Jefus Chrift and more particularly of bonding, bargaining, and informing or putting them to do hurt, any manner of way, to any of the Lord's poor afflicted, born down wandering and diftreffed people. And in like manner, I hate and deteft all communing with, fpeaking favourably of, or eating or drinking with any fuch except in cafe of neceffity. And in like manner, I teftifie my diflike of that dreadful, blafphemous and abominable unpar alleled teft, and all pretended magiftrates or minifters, which have taken the fame, and of all that meddle or join with them, or of payers of fines, for hearing the gofpel, or tranfacting or colleageuing with any fuch, any manner of way, upon the forefaid account. And laftly, I hate too much covetoufnefs in prifoners who are in any capacity to maintain themfelves, and are yet burdenfome to other poor men (though charitable) people. And I join heartily with the teftimonies of our dear suffering brethren, who fuffered either formerly or of late. And likewife 1 join my teftimony to a faithful preached gofpel, by a faithful Prefbyterian, lawfully called, and authorized Ministers, and lawful Magiftrates placed and impowred, as is agreeable and -warranted by the word of God, and none other. And notwithftanding I be branded with not admittting of magiftracy and kingly authority, I do hereby declare, and make it known to the world, That I do allow of lawful authority, agreeably and conformable to the will and command of God, the only lawgiver, as any man in my ftation in Scotland, and accounts a land happy and bleft in having and enjoying of fuch.

And now being honoured to die for adhering to the truth, and to die this fame day, being the 22d, of February, 1684 I do hereby forgive all perfons all wrongs done to me, and with them forgiveneis as I defire to be forgiven of God. And now I leave 'all my friends and Chriftian relations to the good guiding of Almighty God, and bid all of you farewel in the Lord; Farewel all worldly enjoyments, and created comforts; and welcome Father, Son, and Holy Ghoft, into whofe hands I commit my fpirit.

GEORGE MARTIN.

The last Testimony of JOHN MAIN, who lived in the Parisa of Weft Monkland, and fuffered at the Cross of Glasgow, May 19th, 1684

TT cannot be expected, every thing confidered, that ye hall 1 have fuch a teftimony under my hand, as ye have had under the hands of many that have gone before me: but feeing God in his infinite wifdom hath feen it fit to bring me upon the stage for truth, I thought myself bound and obliged in his fight, to teftifie before the world, my clofs adherence to his written word and what is conform thereto. And firit, I teftific my adherence to the Bible, the Old and New Teftament, as the only and a lone rule of faith and obedience I know it ftands not in need of my approbation, but let the world know, I die not as a fool, I think it my duty to affert my adherence unto it, declaring, That I take it for my only rule, rejecting the traditions of men as not canonical 2 I teftity my adherence to the con feffion of faith (faying nothing to that 4th article of the 2,d chapter, but only that it is mifconftructed and made ufe of for another end than ever the honest and faithful Minfters of Chrift had before them, when they gave their approbation of the fame and catechifms larger and thorter, our covenants national and folemn league, acknowledgment of fins, and engagement to du ties, the tum and practical ufe of faving knowledge. 3. To the work of reformation as it was reformed from Popery, Prelacy and Malignancy; even to that work, as it is a direct oppofition to every fin, and motive to every duty; and particularly to the remonstrances, proteftations and testimonies against all the malignant party and actions, they being found out to be incon fiftennt, and contrary to the written word of God, and the fworn principles of the Church of Scotland, and being found to be hurtful to Chriftian fociety, not only by the effects of them but as to the nature and quality of them, even fimply confidered in themselves, befides the bad effects aggravating them in the fight of the truly godly, and rightly zealous Minifters and profeffors of this Church. 4. To the faithful preaching of the gofpel, upon muirs and mountains, and high places of the fields, and particularly the preaching down the fins of the time and up duty. 5. I leave my teftimony to the lifting arms, for perfonal defence, and for defence of the gospel: For feeing that other means were failed, and an occafion offring for that, the Jaw both of God and nature does warrant and allow the fam

I need not go to quote Scripture for the probation of it, fiace the whole scope of it runs In this ftrain; and alfo ye may read feveral places of Scripture, particularly and exprefly allowing, yea, commanding the fame, and many imitable Scripture examples, where the people uf God lifted arms against kings, as the people's refifting of Saul. I teftific to the lawfulnefs of that hoftile defence at Pentland and Bothwel bridge, and feveral field-meetings, where they were put to it by the violent and bloody af faults of their enemies: 6. In a word (for I ftudy brevity be ing neceffitate) to all the faithful teftimonies of the godly, given on fcaffolds, and fome other teftimonies given in hoftile manner; viz. The teftimony given at Rutherglen, May 29. 1679. and the declarations published at Lanerk, in the year 1680..and 1682. I difown and teftific against the declaration publifhed at Hamilton, in the year 1679. particularly because it takes in the intereft of Charles Stewart: for though he was once king, he is now a tyrant, by his cutting the neck of the noble government established in this land, and overturning the main and fundamental conditions whereupon he was conftituted; and it is notour to all in this kingdom, and I believe to part of our neighbour nations alfo, that he carries on a courfe contrary to the word of God, and light of nature, and deftructive to all Chriftian and human fociety; yea a courfe that very heathens would abhor, even the thing itself, abstract from its aggravations.

I come now, in fhort (defiring ye may pardon efcapes) to let you know what I teftifie againft. And Firft (not to go further back) I leave my teftimony against many Minifters, for their leaving their Mafter's work at the fimple command of ufurpers, as if they had been only the fervants of men; and I declare my difapprobation, yea, my teftimony againg the finful filence of Minifters, after they had left their vineyard, where their Mafter had placed them to labour, and their not acknowledging publicly their unfaithfulnefs; for which (together with their other grievous failings) the Lord is this day contending with them. I know not what plagues are fo fad as to be plagu ed by the hand of God, by being laid afide from his work, I fay, their unfaithfulness, in not itanding in the way of the people, when they were fo generally drawn away to hear Curate Miftake me not, thinking that I look upon the people as innocent, when I fpeak of the fins of the Minitters; tor I ice it my duy to terfy bth, and there will not one of them excufe another, But remember that the Aliniftrs must count for the pe ple tha. p. through their default. against the actual accepters of it, and against a woful connivance in the non-accepters of the fame; and where there ought to have been an open teftifying and, protefting against it. I inall Atudy to fay but little; but I die in the faith of it, That God fhall fend a clear difcovery, of matters, and thefe that have betrayed their truft, and have not been as they thould and ought to have been, fhall fee and be afhamed; but Lord grant that many may fee the evil of their doings in time, and may mourn for the fame, or other wife it will be fad for them; but every one hall fee firft or laft: But remember Efau, who found no place for repentance, though he fought it carefully with tears. Against the Minifters, their woful yielding unto and joining with the malignant party and intereft at Bothwel-bridge, and their woful yielding unto the ufurpation made upon the prero gatives royal of our wronged Lord and prince Jefus Christ, by their acceptance of liberty granted after Bothwel-bridge, and taking occafion to preach in houfes according unto the liberty granted, refufing to preach without doors, notwithstanding of the great neceflity fometimes requiring the fame, and many of them refufing to preach when any of the people ftood without doors; this was nottourly known in the time, and I think it be not yet forgot, and however it may be forgot by us, yet I affure you, it is not forgot by a holy God. I teftific against their finful filence, and not jeoparding their lives for their wronged Lord and provoked Mafter, efpecially at the time when Mr. R.-C. and Mr DC went to the fields. I teftify against their condemning of these two, worthies in difcourfe and preaching, and alfo in their practice. In fhort against every thing in minifters and profeffors contrary unto, or inconfiftent with the Prefbyte rian principles of the Church of Scotland. 4 I leave my tefti mony against Popery, Prelacy and Eraftianifm, and every thing contrary to the word of God, and particularly againft Quakerila, Anabaptifm, Independency, and all Sectarians, and what fover is not warranted by the holy Scriptures. 5. Against the impofing of that curfed cefs, not that I call cefs-lifting in itself unlawtul; but I call that cefs unlawful, which was imposed by a corrupt convention of eftates who met at Edinburgh, in the year 1673, for fome things that are in themfelves lawrul, are fome. times fo circumftantiated, as that they become unlawful; as fometimes the end of an action makes the action unlawful; I may give the cefs, for an inftance of this, for the end of impofing it Las themielyes declare) was mainly, to bear down field, meetings, and other innocent affociations of the people of God, difdain fully and wickedly cailed by them rendevouzes of rebilion," which meetings all Scotland was bound to maintain; but they ought to have been in the places conititute for worship, and

would have been there, had bonds and engagements been confcientiously minded by all that were under them. O let not this perfidious generation think, that they are loofed from the ties of these covenants; for as fure as God is in the heavens he will make them know another thing, even that it was not in their power to refcind thefe covenants, and that by going about fo to do, they have brought much wrath upon themselves and their pofterity after them, if they repent not. But oh! do they not look like a generation of his wrath? and not to pafs the bounds of charity, I fear they will be the objects of his wrath; and it will be a dreadful day, fee it who will, when the wicked fhall be as stubble and tow, and the wrath and vengeance of God fhall feize upon them as fire, and burn them up, for they will not efcape. And 6 Against the payers of the cefs; for it was a faď thing in a people, that fhould have oppofed all courses of that kind, instead of oppofing to contribute to the carrying on of that very courfe, that they ought to have oppofed. O that ye would confider, and lay it to heart, and fet themfelves to re deem time, mif- fpent and abufed time! 7. And againft locality and fines paying, feeing that it contributes to the strengthning of the adverfaries hands; as for the locality, we may cafily fee it to be finful, fince they (the enemies) have impofed it for the maintenance of a party raised and keeped up for no other use fas their daily practice declares) but to harafs, rob and spoil the poor people of God, for their clofs (0 that it were cloffer) adhering to their fworn principles, and to kill them for not denying of their principles. And as for paying of fines, it would be confidered, that thefe fines are impofed upon people for their duty, and fines impofed by right and juftice, ought always to be for tranfgreffion : neither can a fine be impofed by right, but for a tranfgreffion; fo that by paying of thefe fines fo impofed, we must be faid either to yield active obedience to an unjust courfe, which we ought always to oppofe, or we may be faid to make ourselves tranfgreffors, and thefe duties (in which we ought to venture life and fortune) to be tranfgreffions. I fay, one of thefe will confequently follow, if not both; But alas! thofe things that are grievously finful many ways, are become fo habitual, that they are never noticed nor thought any thing of, nor will be, till God come in his power and great glory, to disclose the fecrets of all hearts. 7thly I leave my teftimony against the people, their hearing of Curates, bafely leaving the way of truth, and following a course dishonouring to God, and deftructive to themfelves. Alfo against the joining with the indulged and unfaithful minifters, vindicating themfelves thus, That it is good to hear the word," not confidering, that these 7
