from all my predecessors: "the circle of our family.” But it is only just to say that the word "hēmōn" occurs only in the Codex Sinaiticus, and Tischendorf's Greek text. Former translations have been very singular and many of them meaningless such as "The course of Nature" "Inflameth the wheel of our Nativity." "The course of Existence." "The circle of Creation." "The whole round of our Nature." "Course of Life." "The wheel of Nature." "Successive generations of men." "The whole course of Life." "The natural course or order of human affairs "Inflames the circle of Nature." "Setteth on fire the natural frame" "Burneth the course of our generations" and "Setteth on fire the orb of the Creation." The apostle says, The tongue is a firethe world of iniquity-the tongue is placed among our members and defileth the whole body and setteth on fire "ton trochon," the circle, "tes geneseos hemōn," of our family. "A family" is the 5th meaning of "genesis" given by Lidd. and Scott. "The circle of our family" I believe to be an accurate translation: it is common sense-it is a matter of fact and of universal experience, and presents to us a truth, whose power is witnessed in daily life.

There are some untranslated words on which I wished to have made a few observations, but I refrain. I am now only a translator. If my life and health be continued, I hope to publish another book, "LETTERS ON THE NEW TESTAMENT," embracing all the difficulties I have met with in the study of the writings of the Evangelists and Apostles.

"ON THE STUDY OF SCRIPTURE.”

"ESPECIALLY SHOULD THE STUDENT LEARN ΤΟ QUOTE SCRIPTURE, NOT SECOND-HAND,

BUT FROM

THE FOUNTAIN HEAD; AND TAKE CARE NOT TO DIS-
TORT ITS MEANING AS MANY DO.
TO GET

AT THE REAL MEANING, IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO TAKE
FOUR OR FIVE INSULATED WORDS; YOU MUST LOOK
WHERE THEY COME FROM, WHAT WAS SAID, BY
WHOM IT WAS SAID, TO WHOM IT WAS SAID, AT
WHAT TIME, ON WHAT OCCASION, IN WHAT WORDS,
WHAT PRECEDED, WHAT FOLLOWED."

THE genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son

of 2 Abraham begat Isaac; Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judah and his brethren; 3 And Judah begat Phares and Zara by Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram; 4And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon; 5And Salmon begat Bocs by Rachab; and Boes begat Obed by Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; 6And Jesse begat David the king; and David begat Solomon by the (wife) of Uriah; 7And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asaph; 8And Asaph begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias; 9And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias; 10And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias ; 11 And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time of the exile to Babylon: 12And after the exile to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel; 13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor; 14 And Azor begat Sadok; and Sadok begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud; 15And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob; 16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. 17 All the generations then from Abraham until David are fourteen generations; and from David until the exile of Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the exile of Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations.

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was thus: His mother Mary having been betrothed to Joseph, before that they came together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit. 19But Joseph her husband, being just, and not wishing to expose her, determined to divorce her privately. 20But while he thought on these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, fear not to
