him to depart from their coasts. 18 And when he was come into the boat, the demoniac besought him that he might be with him. 19 And he suffered him not, but saith to him, Go to thy house to thy friends, and tell them what things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath pitied thee. 20 And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis what things Jesus had done for him: and all wondered.

21 And Jesus again having crossed in the boat to the other side, a great multitude gathered about him: and he was near the lake. 22 And there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet, 23 And besought him greatly, saying, That my little danghter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed, and live. 24 And he went with him and a great multitude followed him, and pressed upon him. 25 And a woman, who had a hemorrhage twelve years, 26 And had suffered many things by many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was none the better, but rather grew worse, 27 Having heard the things about Jesus, came with the multitude behind, and touched his garment. 28 For she said, If I may touch but his garment I shall be healed. 29 And immediately her hemorrhage was dried up; and she knew in her body that she was healed from the scourge. 30And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that power had gone out of him, turned about in the crowd and said, Who touched my garments? 31 And his disciples said to him, Thou seest the multitude pressing thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? 32And he looked round about to see her who had done this. 33 But the woman afraid and trembling, knowing what was done to her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. 34And he said to her, Daughter, thy faith hath healed thee; go in peace, and be in health from thy scourge.

35 While he was yet speaking, they come for the ruler of the synagogue saying-Thy daughter is dead : why troublest thou the Master any further? 36 But Jesus having over-heard the word spoken, he saith to the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.

37 And he suffered no one to follow him, except Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. 38 And they come to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and he seeth a tumult, and people weeping and wailing greatly. 39 And on entering he saith to them, Why make ye this tumult, and weep? the child is not dead, but sleepeth. 40 And they laughed at him. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with him, and entereth in where the child was. 41 And having taken the hand of the child, he saith to her, Talitha Koum, which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say to thee, arise. 42 Ánd immediately the damsel arose, and walked; for she was about twelve years old. And immediately they were astonished with a great astonishment. 43 And he charged them strictly that no one should know this; and he commanded that something should be given to her to eat.

AND he went out thence, and cometh into his own

country; and his disciples follow him. 2And it being a sabbath, he began to teach in the synagogue : and many hearing him were astonished, saying, Whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given to him, and such mighty works are wrought by his hands ? 3Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joseph, and of Judas, and Simon ? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honour, except in his own country, and among his own kinsmen, and in his own house. 5And he could do no mighty work there, except that on laying his hands upon a few who were infirm, he healed them. 6And he marvelled on account of their unbelief. And Jesus went round about the villages, teaching.

7And he calleth to him the twelve, and began to send them forth two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; 8 And commanded them that they should take nothing for the journey, except a staff only; no bread, no scrip, no money in the

girdle. 9But be shod with sandals; and put not on two

coats. 10 And he said to them, wherever ye enter

into a house, there abide till ye depart thence. 11And

whatever place shall not receive you, nor hear you,

going out from thence, shake off the dust under your

feet for a testimony against them. 12And they went

out, and preached that they should repent. 13 And they

cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who

were infirm, and healed them.

14 And Herod the king heard of him for his name

was well known: and he said that John the Baptist

was risen from the dead, and on this account the mighty

powers do work in him. 15Others said, That he is

Elijah. And others, That he is a prophet, like as one

of the prophets. 16But Herod having heard, said,

John, whom I beheaded, this same is risen. 17 For

Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold of John,

and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, the

wife of his brother Philip: for he had married her.

18 For John said to Herod, It is not lawful for thee to

have thy brother's wife. 19Now Herodias was enraged

with him and wished to kill him; but she could not:

20 For Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a

just and holy man, and protected him; and when he heard

him, he doubted many things, but heard him gladly.

21 And on a convenient day, when Herod on his birthday

was making a supper for his nobles, high captains, and

chief men of Galilee; 22And the daughter of Herodias

herself came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and those

reclining with him. And the king said to the damsel,

Ask of me whatever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.

23 And he sware to her, Whatever thou ask of me, I will

give it thee, even to the half of my kingdom. 24 And

she went out, and said to her mother, What am I to

ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.

25 And she came in immediately, with haste to the

king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me

instantly, on a dish, the head of John the Baptist.

26 And being much grieved, the king, on account of the

oaths, and of the guests, was unwilling to refuse her.

27 And immediately the king sent one of his body guard,

and commanded his head to be brought. 28 And he went

and beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head on a dish, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother. 29 And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.

30 And the apostles gathered together to Jesus, and told him all things, what they had done, and taught. 31 And he saith to them, Come ye yourselves privately into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure, even to eat. 32 And they departed in a boat into a desert place privately. 33 And they saw them departing, and many knew them, and ran together on foot from all the cities, and went there before them. 34 And when he came out he saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion towards them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. 35 And already the day being far spent, his disciples coming to him said, This is a desert place, and already the hour is late. 36Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and villages, and buy themselves food to eat. 37 But he answering said to them, Give ye them to eat. And they say to him, Shall we go and buy loaves for two hundred denarii, and give them to eat? 38He saith to them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And on coming they say, Five, and two fishes. 39 And he commanded them all to recline companies by companies upon the green grass. 40 And they lay down in squares by hundreds, and by fifties. 41And taking the five loaves and the two fishes, looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and divided the two fishes among all. 42 And they did all eat, and were filled. 43And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. 44 And they who did eat were about five thousand men.

45 And immediately he constrained his disciples to enter the boat, and to go before to the opposite side to Bethsaida, while he sent away the multitude. 46 And having sent them away, he departed on to the mountain to pray. 47 And when even was come, the boat was

in the midst of the lake, and he alone on the land. 48 And seeing them distressed by the rowing; for the wind was contrary to them, about the fourth watch of the night he cometh to them, walking upon the lake, and would have passed by them. 49But when they saw him walking upon the lake, they supposed it to be an apparition, and cried out: 50For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith to them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. 51And he went up to them into the boat; and the wind ceased: and they were greatly amazed among themselves. 52 For they understood not about the loaves for their heart was hardened.

53 And when they had passed over, they came to the land of Gennesarat, and drew to the shore. 54And on their leaving the boat, immediately they knew him. 55 And they ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those who were ill, where they heard he was. 56And wherever he entered into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the market places, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were healed.

HEN came together to him the Pharisees, and some of the scribes, who came from Jerusalem. 2 And when they saw some of his disciples eating bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashed, hands:3 For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands often, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders: 4And on coming from a market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there are, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and of pots and of vessels of brass. 5Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk_not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat the bread with unwashed hands? 6 But he said to them, Well hath Isaiah prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
