and rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us go: behold, he is at hand who betrayeth me.

47 And while he was speaking, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48Now he who betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, He whom I shall kiss, the same is he: seize him. 49 And immediately he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, Rabbi; and kissed him. 50 And he said to him, Friend, for what art thou here? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him. 51 And, behold, one of those with Jesus stretched out the hand, and drew his sword, and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. 52Then said Jesus to him, Return thy sword into its place: for all who take the sword shall perish by the sword. 53Thinkest thou that I am not able to pray to my Father, and he shall forthwith give me here more than twelve legions of angels? 54йow then, should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? 55In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and clubs to take me? I sat daily teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me. 56 But all this has come to pass, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.

57 And they who had seized Jesus, led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. 58 But Peter followed him afar off to the court of the high priest, and went in, and sat with the officers, to see the end. 59Now the chief priests and the whole sanhedrim sought false testimony against Jesus, that they might put him to death; 60 And though many false witnesses came, they did not find it. And afterwards, two coming forward, said, 61This man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. 2And the high priest, rising, said to him, Answerest thou nothing what these witness against thee? 63 But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us if thou art the

Christ, the Son of God? 64Jesus saith to him, Thou hast said: moreover I say to you, from this time ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of heaven. 65 Then the high priest rent his garments, saying, Lo! he hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses ? behold, now ye have heard the blasphemy. 66 What think ye? And they answering, said, He is liable to death. 67Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others struck him, 68Saying, Prophesy to us, O Christ, Who is he that struck thee?

69 Now Peter sat without in the court: and one maid servant came to him, saying, And thou wast with Jesus, the Galilean. 70 But he denied before all, saying, I know not what thou sayest. 71But when he had gone into the porch another saw him, and saith to those who were there, This man was with Jesus, the Nazarene 72And again he denied with an oath, I know not the man. 73 And after a while, they who stood by coming up, said to Peter, Surely thou also art of them; for thy speech also betrayeth thee. 74Then he began to curse and to swear, that I have not known the man. And immediately a cock crew. 75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, who said to him, Before a cock crows thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

But people took council against Jesus, so as to put him to death: 2And having bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pilate, the governor.

3Then Judas, who had betrayed him, seeing that he was condemned, repented, and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4Saying, I have sinned, having betrayed innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. 5And throwing down the thirty pieces of silver in the temple, he departed and went and hanged himself. 6And the chief priests having taken the silver pieces, said, It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the

price of blood. 7But having taken council, they bought with them the field of the potter, for the burial of strangers. 8Wherefore that field was called the field of blood, until this day. 9And what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him who was valued, whom they valued from the sons of Israel, 10 And gave them for the field of the potter, as the Lord appointed me.

11And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said, Thou sayest. 12And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. 13Then Pilate saith to him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? 14And he answered him not one word; so that the governor marvelled greatly. 15Now, at the festival, the governor was accustomed to release to the people one prisoner, whom they wished. 16And they had then a well-known prisoner, called Barabbas. 17Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, Whom will ye that I release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus called Christ? 18For he knew that through envy they had delivered him. 19But as he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things to-day in a dream on account of him. 20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. 21 And the governor answering, said to them, Which of the two will ye that I release to you? They said, Barabbas. 22 Pilate saith to them, What shall I do then with Jesus called Christ? They all say, Let him be crucified. 23 And he said, Why, what evil hathhe done? But they cried out vehemently, saying, Let him be crucified. 24 When Pilate saw that he could not prevail, but rather raised a tumult, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: but see ye to it. 25 And all the people answering, said, His blood be on us, and upon our children. 26Then he released Barabbas to them: and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him that he

might be crucified. 27Then the soldiers of the governor having taken Jesus into the Judgment hall, brought together to him the whole band. 28 And having stripped him, they put on him a scarlet robe. 29 And having platted a crown of thorns, they placed it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand and having kneeled before him, they mocked him, saying, Hail, the King of the Jews! 30 And having spit upon him, they took the reed and struck him on his head. 31 And when they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put on him his own garments, and led him away to crucify him.

:

32 But coming out, they found a man of Cyrene, named Simon, him they compelled to carry his cross. 33 And coming to a place which is called Golgotha, a place of a skull, 34They gave him wine to drink mingled with gall and having tasted it he would not drink. 35 And having crucified him, they parted his garments, casting the lot. 36 And sitting down they watched him there; 37 And they placed over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 38Then were crucified with him two thieves, one on the right hand and one on the left. 39 And they who passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, 40 And saying, Thou who destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself, if thou art the son of God, and come down from the cross. 41 Likewise the chief priests mocking him, with the elders and scribes, saying, 42He saved others; himself he cannot save. He is a King of Israel! let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe on him. 43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will: for he said, I am the Son of God. 44The thieves also, who were crucified with him reviled him.

45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness until the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani ? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? 47 Some of them who stood there, having heard this said, He calleth for Elijah. 48 And immediately one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and having put it on a reed, gave drink to him. 49 And the rest said, Leave him, let us see if Elijah will come to

save him. But another having taken a spear pierced his side, and there came forth water and blood.

50 And Jesus, having cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the spirit.

51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in two from top to bottom; and the earth was shaken, and the rocks were rent; 52And many bodies of the saints having slept were raised. 53 And coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, appeared to many in the holy city. 54And the centurion, and those with him, watching Jesus, seeing the earthquake, and the things that were done, feared greatly, saying, Truly this was a Son of God. 55And many women were there looking on from a distance, who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him: 56 Among whom was Mary the mother of James and Mary the mother of Joseph, and Mary the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

57 Now when it was evening a rich man of Arimathæa, named Joseph, who himself also was a disciple of Jesus, 58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded it to be delivered. 59 And Joseph having taken the body, wrapped it in clean linen. 60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn in the rock: and having rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, he went away. 61And there were there Mary the Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the tomb.

62 Now on the morrow which is after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees came together to Pilate, 63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while living, After three days I rise again. 6+Command therefore that the tomb be made safe until the third day, lest his disciples coming, should steal him, and say to the people, He is risen from the dead: and the last deceit shall be worse than the first. 65 Pilate said to them, Ye have a guard: go away, make it as secure as ye can. 66 And they went with the guard, and made the tomb secure; sealing the stone.
