Render therefore to Cæsar the things of Cæsar; and to God the things of God. 22And having heard, they marvelled, and having left him they went away.

23 And on that day came to him Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, and asked him, 24Saying, Teacher, Moses said, If any one die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up issue to his brother. 25Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, having married, died, and, having no issue, left his wife to his brother: 26 Likewise the second also, and the third, until the seventh. 27 And last of all the woman died. 28Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her. 29Jesus answering said to them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but they are as angels of God in heaven. 31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 32I am the God of Abraham, and God of Isaac, and God of Jacob? He is not God of the dead, but of the living. 33 And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his teaching. 34But the Pharisees having heard that he had silenced the Sadducees were gathered together to the same place. 35And one of them, a teacher of the law, tempting him, asked, 36Teacher, which commandment in the law is great? 37 And he said to him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38This is the great and first commandment. 39The second is like to it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40On these two commandments depend the law and the prophets.

41 And the Pharisees being gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42Saying, what think ye about the Christ? whose son is he? They say to him; David's. 43He saith to them, How then in spirit doth David call him Lord, saying, 44The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? 45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? 46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor any one from that day dared to question him any more.

T

HEN Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples, 2Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit upon the seat of Moses. 3Therefore all, whatever they shall say to you, do; but do not ye after their works for they say, and do not. 4And they bind great heavy burdens, and lay them on the shoulders of men; but they will not move them with their finger. 5But all their works they do to be seen by men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the fringes of their garments, 6And they love the chief places of feasts, and the first seats in the synagogues, And the salutations in the market-places, and to be called by men, Rabbi. 8 But be ye not called Rabbi: for one is your leader; and all ye are brethren. 9And call no one your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, the heavenly. 10Neither be ye called leaders: for one is your Leader -Christ. 11But the greater of you shall be servant. 12 And whoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he who shall humble himself shall be exalted. 13But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut the kingdom of heaven before men: for ye neither go in, nor suffer ye them that are entering to enter. 15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the son of Gehenna than yourselves. 16Woe to you, the blind guides, who say, Whoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! 17Fools and blind: for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? 18 And whoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, is a debtor. 19Blind! for which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? 20He therefore who swears by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. 21 And he who swears by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him who dwelleth therein. 22And he who swears by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him who sitteth upon it. 23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye tithe

mint, and anise, and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. 24 Blind guides, who strain off a gnat, and swallow a camel. 25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and injustice. 26 Blind Pharisee! cleanse first within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. 27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like to whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of the bones of the dead and of all uncleanness. 28 Thus ye also outwardly indeed appear righteous to men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. 29 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and adorn the sepulchres of the righteous, 30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. 31So that ye testify to yourselves, that ye are the sons of those who killed the prophets. 32And ye filled up the measure of your fathers. 33Serpents! offspring of vipers! how can ye escape the judgment of Gehenna ? 34On this account, behold, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: 35That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zacharias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. 36 Verily I say to you, All these things shall come upon this generation. 370 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killest the prophets, and stonest them who are sent to thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! 38 Behold, your house is left to you desolate. 39 For I say to you, Ye shall not see me from this time, till ye shall say, Blessed is he who cometh in the name of the Lord.

XXIV.

AND Jesus went out from the temple and departed;

and his disciples came to show him the buildings of the temple. 2And he answering said to them, See ye not all these ? verily I say to you, There shall not be left here stone upon stone, which shall not be thrown down. And as he was sitting upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, Tell us, when these things shall be? and what the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the age? 4And Jesus answering said to them, Take heed lest any one should deceive you. 5For many shall come in my name, saying, I am the Christ; and shall deceive many. 6And ye shall be about to hear of wars and rumours of wars: see to it, be not troubled: for it must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes and famines, in divers places. But all these are the beginning of sorrows.

Then shall they deliver you to affliction, and shall kill you and ye shall be hated by all nations through my name. 10 And then many shall be offended, and shall deliver up one another for affliction. 11And many false prophets shall be raised up, and shall deceive many. 12And because iniquity shall abound the love of many shall grow cold. 13But he who endureth to the end, the same shall be saved. 14And this, the gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a testimony to all nations; and then shall the end come. 15 When therefore ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place, (he who reads, let him understand:) 16Then let those who are in Judæa flee to the mountains: 17Let him who is on the house not come down to take any thing out of his house 18Neither let him who is in the field return back to take his garment. 19 But woe to those who are pregnant, and to those who are suckling in those days! 20But pray that your flight be not in the winter, nor on the sabbath: 21For then there shall be great tribulation, such as has not been from the

beginning of the world until now, nor ever shall be. 22 And except those days were shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but on account of the chosen those days shall be shortened. 23Then if any one shall say to you, Lo! here is Christ, or there; believe not. 24For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show signs and wonders; so as to deceive if possible even the chosen. 25 Behold, I have told you before. 26 If they shall say to you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. 27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth to the west; so shall be the coming of the Son of man. 28 Wherever the body may be, there will the eagles be gathered together. 29 And immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and all the tribes of the earth shall mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31And he shall send his angels with a great trumpet, and he shall gather his chosen from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. 32Now learn the parable from the fig tree; When already its branch has become tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: 33Thus also when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. 34Verily I say to you, This generation shall not pass away till all these things be done. 36 But concerning that day and hour no one knoweth, not the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. 37 And as the days of Noah so shall be the coming of the Son of man. 38 For as they were in the days which were before the flood eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, 39And knew not until the flood came, and took all away; thus also shall be the coming of the Son of man. 40Then there shall be two in the field; one shall be taken, and one left. 41Two grinding at the mill; one shall be taken and one left. 42Watch therefore for ye know not what day your Lord cometh.
