he gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. 20 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full. 21 And they who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

22 And he constrained the disciples to get into the boat and to go before him to the other side, until he sent the multitudes away. 23 And he went on the mountain privately to pray: and when evening was come, he was there alone. 24 But the boat was already in the middle of the lake, tossed with the waves: for the wind was contrary. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night he went to them, walking on the lake. 26 And when they saw him walking on the lake, they were troubled, saying, It is an apparition; and they cried out through fear. 27 And immediately he spoke to them, saying, Take courage; it is I; be not afraid. 28 And Peter answering him, said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come to thee on the waters. 29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down from the boat, he walked on the waters to come. Then he came to Jesus. 30 But seeing the wind he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, Lord, save me. 31 Ånd immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt? 32 And when they were come into the boat the wind ceased. 33Then they in the boat did him homage, saying, Truly, thou art a Son of God.

34 And having passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret. 35 And the men of that place knowing him, they sent into all that country round about, and brought to him all who were diseased; 36 And besought him that they might touch only the border of his garment: and as many as touched were healed.

HEN came to Jesus Scribes and Pharisees, from

gress the tradition of the ancients? for they wash not the hands when they eat bread. 3But he answering said to them, Why do ye transgress the com

mandment of God through your tradition? 4For God commanded, saying, Honor thy father and thy mother, and he who revileth father or mother, let him end by death. 5But ye say, Whoever may say to father or mother, It is an offering, whatever of mine might be profitable to thee, is nothing; he should not honor his father. 6And ye have made the law of God of none effect through your tradition. 7Hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying, 8This people honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far off from me. 9And in vain they worship me, teaching as doctrines commandments of men. 10 And having called the multitude, he said to them, Hear, and understand: 11What entereth into the mouth, this defileth not the man, but what cometh out of the mouth this defileth the man. 12Then the disciples coming, said to him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees, having heard the saying, were offended? 13But he answering said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. 14 Let them alone: they are blind leaders. And if a blind man lead a blind man, both shall fall into the ditch. 15But Peter answering said to him, Explain to us this parable. 16And he said, Are ye also still without understanding? 17Do ye not yet understand, that whatever entereth into the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? 18 But the things proceeding out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and these defile the man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies: 20These are the things defiling the man: but to eat with unwashed hands defileth not the man.

21 And Jesus going from thence, withdrew into the parts of Tyre and of Sidon. 22 And, behold, a woman of Canaan, coming from those coasts, cried out, saying, Pity me, O Lord, son of David; my daughter is grievously possessed of a demon. 23 But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after

us.

24 But he answering, said, I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 25 And she came and fell down before him, saying, Lord, help me. 26 But

he answering, said, It is not good to take the bread of the children and cast it to the dogs. 27 And she said, True, Lord, since even the dogs eat of the crumbs falling from their masters' table. 28Then Jesus answering, said to her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wishest. And her daughter was healed from that hour.

29 And Jesus having departed thence, came near to the lake of Galilee; and went up on the mount and sat down there. 30 And great multitudes came to him, having with them lame, blind, maimed, dumb, and many others, and cast them down at his feet; and he healed them: 31So that the multitude wondered, seeing the dumb speaking, the lame walking about, and the blind seeing and they glorified the God of Israel. 32And Jesus having called the disciples, said, I have compassion on the multitude, because already they have continued with me three days, and have nothing to eat: and I am unwilling to send them away fasting, lest they faint on the way. 33 And the disciples say to him, Whence should we have so many loaves in the desert, as to fill so great a multitude? 34And Jesus saith to them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes. 35 And having commanded the multitude to recline on the ground, 36He took the seven loaves and the fishes, and having given thanks, broke them, and gave to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. 37 And all ate and were filled: and they took up of what remained of the fragments seven baskets full. 38 And they who had eaten were about four thousand men, besides children and women. 39 And having sent away the multitudes, he went into the boat, and came into the coasts of Magadan.

ND the Pharisees and Sadducees came tempting,

AND and Sadducees came

2 But he answering, said to them, 4A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh a sign; and no sign shall be given to it, except the sign of Jonah. And having left them he departed.

5And the disciples having_come to the other side, forgot to take loaves. 6And Jesus said, See and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. 7And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we took not loaves. 8And Jesus knowing it, said, Why reason ye among yourselves because ye have not loaves, O ye of little faith? 9Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? 10Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up ? 11 How is it that ye understand not that I spoke to you not concerning bread: that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees? 12Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

13 And Jesus having come into the parts of Cæsarea Philippi, asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say the Son of Man is ? 14 And they said, Some, John the Baptist: others, Elijah, and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. 15 He saith to them, But whom say ye that I am? 16 And Simon Peter answering, said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answering, said to him, Blessed art thou, Simon-Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father in heaven. 18And I also say to thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 191 will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven and whatever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 20Then he charged his disciples that they should tell no man that he is the Christ. 21 From that time Jesus Christ began to shew to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be put to death, and be raised the third day. 22 And Peter taking him, began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be to thee. 22 But he turning, said to Peter, Go behind me, Satan: thou art my stumbling-block: for thou regardest not the things of God, but the things of men.

24Then Jesus said to his disciples, If any one wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me. 25For whoever may wish to save his life shall lose it: and whoever shall lose his life for my sake shall find it. 26 For what shall a man be profited, if he should gain the whole world, and lose his own life? or what shall a man give in exchange for his life? 27 For the Son of man is about to come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall render to every man according to his works. 28Verily I say to you, There are some standing here, who shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

ND after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and

A Johner brother, and bringeth them up on a high mountain privately, 2And was transfigured before them; and his face shone as the sun, and his garments became white as the light. And, behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah talking with him. 4 And Peter, answering, said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, I will make here three tents; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah. 5While he was speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my Son, the Beloved, in whom I am well pleased; hear him. 6And the disciples having heard, fell on their face, and were greatly afraid. 7And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. And having raised their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. 9And as they came down from the mount, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen from the dead. 10 And the disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elijah must first come? 11 And he answering said to them, Elijah truly cometh, and shall restore all things. 12But I say to you, That Elijah is come already, and they knew him not, but have done to him whatever they wished. Thus also the Son of man is about to suffer by them. 13Then the disciples
