adulterous generation seeketh a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, except the sign of Jonah the prophet. 40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 Men of Nineveh shall rise in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and, behold, a greater than Jonah is here. 42The queen of the south shall arise in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. 43 But when the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, he passeth through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. 44Then he saith, I will return to my house from whence I came; and he findeth it empty, swept, and set in order. 45 Then he goeth and taketh with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and having entered in, dwells there and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it be also with this wicked generation.

46 While he was speaking to the multitudes, behold his mother and his brethren stood without. 48And he answered and said to him who told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? 49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 50For whoever will do the will of my Father in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

IN same gone out titties were

N that same day Jesus having gone out of the house,

gathered around him, so that he went into a boat and sat down; and all the multitude stood on the shore. And he spoke many things to them in parables, saying, Behold, the sower went forth to sow; 4And in his sowing some seeds fell by the way side, and the birds came and eat them: 5And others fell among stones, where they had not much earth and immediately sprang up, because

they had no depth of earth: 6But the sun having risen, they were scorched: and because they had no root, they withered. And others fell among the thorns; and the thorns grew up, and choked them: 8And others fell upon good ground, and yielded fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. 9He who hath ears let him hear. 10And the disciples having come, said to him, Wherefore speakest thou to them in parables? 11 But he answering, said to them, Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 For whoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but whoever hath not, from him shall be taken even what he hath. 13On this account I speak to them in parables: because seeing they see not; and hearing they hear not, nor understand. 14And to them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: 15For the heart of this people is become gross, and they heard with their ears heavily, and their eyes they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and might turn, and I should heal them. 16But blessed are your eyes, for they see and your ears, for they hear. 17Verily I say to you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see what ye see, and have not seen; and to hear what ye hear and have not heard. 18Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. 19 Every one hearing the word of the kingdom, and not understanding it, the evil one cometh and seizeth what was sown in his heart. This is what was sown by the way side. 20 And what was sown among the stones, this is he who heareth the word, and immediately with joy receiveth it; 21 Yet hath not root in himself, but is for a time and when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, immediately he is offended. 22 And what was sown among the thorns-this is he who heareth the word; and the anxious care of the world, and the deceitfulness of wealth, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. 23 But what was sown on the good ground-this is he who heareth and under

standeth the word; who indeed beareth fruit, and yieldeth some a hundred, some sixty, and some thirty fold.

24 Another parable he set before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven was likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field: 25 But while the men slept, his enemy came and over-sowed tares in the midst of the wheat, and went away. 26And when the blade sprung up, and yielded fruit, then appeared also the tares. 27 And the servants of the master of the house coming to him, said, Sir, did'st thou not sow good seed in thy field? Whence then hath it the tares? 28 He said to them, An enemy did this. The servants said to him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them? 29 But he said, No: lest gathering together the tares, ye root up the wheat with them. 30Suffer both to grow together until the harvest and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them but gather the wheat into my barn.

31 Another parable he set before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard, which a man took and sowed in his field: 32Which indeed is the least of all the seeds; but when it is grown, it is the greatest of the herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and roost in its branches. 33 Another parable he spoke to them, saying; The kingdom of heaven is like to leaven, which a woman having taken, hid in three measures of meal, until the whole was leavened.

34 All these things Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables; and without a parable he spoke nothing to them: 35So that what was spoken by the Prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, saying, I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world.

36Then, having sent away the multitude, he went into the house, and his disciples came to him, saying; Explain to us the parable of the tares of the field. 37 And he, answering, said, He who soweth the good seed is the Son of man: 38 And the field is the world; and the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom;

but the tares are the sons of the evil one; 39 And the enemy who sowed them is the devil; and the harvest is the end of the age; and the reapers are angels. 40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned with fire; so shall it be in the end of the age. 41The Son of man shall send the angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all the stumbling-blocks, and those who work iniquity; 42 And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. 43Then the righteous shall shine forth as the Sun in the Kingdom of their Father. He who hath ears let him hear. 44The kingdom of heaven is like to a treasure hidden in the field; which a man having found, he hid, and from the joy of it goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. 45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like to a merchant seeking good pearls: 46 And having found one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. 47 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like to a net, cast into the lake, and gathering of every kind: 48 Which, when it was full, they drew upon the shore, and having sat down, they gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away. 49So shall it be in the end of the age: the angels shall come forth, and separate the wicked from the midst of the righteous, 50 And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. 51 Understand ye all these things? They say to him, Yes. 52And he said to them, On this account every scribe instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like to a man, a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.

53 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence. 54 And having come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty powers? 55Is he not the son of the carpenter? Is not his mother called Mary? and his brothers James, and John, and Simon, and Judas? 56And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath he all these things? 57 And they were offended at him. But he said to them, A prophet is not without honour, except in his

own country, and in his own house. 58 And he did not many mighty works there through their unbelief.

T that time Herod the tetrarch heard the fame of

A

Baptist; he hath been raised from the dead; and on this account the mighty powers work in him 3For Herod having laid hold on John, bound and put him in prison through Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. 4For John said, It is not lawful for thee to have her. 5And wishing to kill him he was afraid of the multitude, because they held him as a prophet. 6 But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod. 7 Wherefore he promised with an oath to give to her whatever she might ask. 8And she, being incited by her mother, saith, Give to me, here upon a dish, the head of John the Baptist. 9And the king was sorry: but on account of the oaths, and of those reclining with him, he commanded it to be given. 10 And having sent, he beheaded John in the prison. 11 And his head was brought on a dish, and was given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother. 12 And his disciples came and took away his body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus. 13 And Jesus having heard of it, departed thence in a boat into a desert place privately; and when the multitude had heard of it they followed him on foot from the cities.

14 And having gone out, he saw a great multitude, and had compassion on them, and he healed their sick. 15 And when it was evening, the disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time already past; send therefore the multitude away, that they may go to the places around, and buy themselves food. 16 But he said to them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat. 17 And they say to him, We have here only five loaves, and two fishes. 18 And he said, Bring them here to me. 19 And he commanded the multitude to recline on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks, and having broken,
