are born again to a true life, to immortality, to bliss! And then is verified for us that noble exclamation of the Psalmist: "Let God arise, and let❞ mine "enemies be scattered :" let them "also that hate" me "flee before" me, "as smoke is driven away, as wax melteth before the fire." Then at last is accomplished in our behalf that transporting promise of Jesus Christ: "And your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you."

3. I WILL PRAY MY FATHER, AND HE SHALL GIVE YOU ANOTHER COMFORTER.-Our Lord himself then prays in order to obtain for his disciples the divine COMFORTER, and at his prayer the HOLY GHOST descends! They also, the Apostles of Christ, were praying when this GIFT OF GOD was granted to them. Oh, then, My Brethren, let us ask, with earnestness, with humility, with perseverance; and God will not refuse us his good Spirit. We have a pledge for it in his Word, we have a guarantee of it in the example of the disciples and of the saints. I will say yet more: when we pray, the Spirit

himself will pray also within us.-How is it possible that our prayers should not be heard and answered? He who will ask for us, He who will pray with us, is the same with Him who hears and answers.

Then shall we call God OUR FATHER! and he will answer us, HERE AM I! Then will all those celestial virtues which are the fruits of the spirit of the Lord, spring up in our souls, the love of righteousness and of peace, brotherly love, mutual forbearance, gentleness, humility, temperance, holiness of life. Then will these blessed dispositions in us afford each other reciprocal support; this will inspire us with moderation in prosperity, that will enable us, in misfortune, "in our patience to possess our souls;" all will unite together to uphold us, in temptation, in the day of trial, and at the hour of death.

O, then, descend into our hearts, thou SUPREME COMFORTER of men! Thou, only

Thou canst heal the wounds which sin has inflicted upon us;-Thou only canst direct the despairing sinner to peace and joy;-Thou only canst supply the Saviour's place amongst us,

until Thou givest him back to our sight! "O, make no long tarrying!" Our strength faileth us in thy absence. In this vale of tears be Thou our guide, and lead us the way of heaven; be Thou light to the blind; be Thou hope to those who have lost all hope; be Thou the salvation of them that perish! Bring forth in us more than we can ask, or even conceive;-sanctify our souls,-comfort us,-save us! for the sake of Jesus Christ, to whom, with Thee, THE SPIRIT of adoption and grace, and to "our Father which is in Heaven," ONE GOD BLESSED FOR EVER, be praise, adoration, dominion and glory, now and for ever! Amen.
