LUKE 3. 7-(and) to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?

11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

12 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?

13 And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether

MATT. 3. 11-unto repentance: but

MARK. 1. 7-there cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, MATT. 3. 11-and with fire:

12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

LUKE 3. 18-And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.

19 But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,

20 Added yet this above all, that he shut up Johan in prison.

Lesson 8.-Jesus is baptized.

MATT. iii. 13-17; MARK i. 9-11; LUKE iii. 21-23 Geography:-Nazareth and the River Jordan. [Commit to memory Luke iii. 21-23.]

MARK 1,9-And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, MATT. 3. 13-to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and coinest thou to me? 15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. LUKE 3. 21-Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized,

MATT. 3, 16-went up straightway out of the

water;

LUKE 3. 21-and praying,

MATT. 3. 16-lo, the heavens were opened unto him,

LUKE 3. 22-and the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him,

LUKE 3. 23-And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age.

[Commit &c., Luke iv. 1; Matt. iv. 1-4.] LUKE 4. 1-And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

MATT. 4. 1-to be tempted of the devil.

MARK 1. 13-And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts.

LUKE 4. 2-And in those days he did eat nothing:

MATT. 4. 2-And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But

LUKE 4. 4-Jesus answered

MATT 4. 4-and said. It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down

JOHN'S SECOND TESTIMONY.

LUKE 4. 9-from hence:

21

MATT. 4. 6-for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee,

LUKE 4. 10-to keep thee:

11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a

stone

12 And Jesus answering said unto him,

MATT. 4.7-It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; LUKE 4. 5-in a moment of time."

6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

7 If thou therefore

MATT. 4. 9-wilt fall down and worship me, LUKE 4. 7-all shall be thine.

8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season. MATT. 4. 11-And, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Lesson 10. John's Second Testimony. John i 19-51.

Geog:-Bethany or Bethabara, near Scythopolis. [Commit to memory, verses 26, 27, 29-34.] JOHN 1. 19-And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent Priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

20 And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.

21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

22 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

24 And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.

25 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;

27 He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

35 Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;

36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
