A SERMON.

'Strengthen the things that are ready to die."Rev. iii. 2.

THIS may be considered no less a promise than a precept. God has engaged in covenant from time to time to restore his people, who continually need the reviving influences of divine grace. "Thou renewest the face of the earth," may apply spiritually as well as naturally. The words here are part of a message from our Lord Jesus Christ to the church in Sardis. The whole is highly instructive. "These things saith He who hath the seven Spirits of God." What a glorious declaration of the Divine Spirit's perfections!-Sevenfold: that is, perfect; as also of his omnipresence: seven Spirits, and seven churches. Not that there is more than one Holy Ghost; but that his sacred influences should be known and felt in each of those seven churches, as much as if he had only that one to regard; while the words teach us the doctrine of Christ's proper divinity. How could he be said to have the seven Spirits of God, unless in him dwelt all the fulness of the Godhead bodily? "I know thy works." Yea, Lord, says
