ESUS anfwered, Are there not twelve Hours in the Day? If any Man walk in the Day he ftumbleth not, because he feeth the Light of the World. --- But if a Man walk in the Night, he ftumbleth, because there is no Light in him, John xi. 9, 10.

He who acts in the Light, and by the Grace of JESUS CHRIST, is continually doing Good: without this Grace there is nothing but Darkness and Sin. While it was Day, that is, during the Time of CHRIST'S mortal Life allotted by his Father, his Enemies had no Power at all over it; but when the Time of Night, namely of his Death, was come, he delivered himself into their Hands The Will of God is the Light by which we ought to be guided. Nothing grievous can ever happen to us, fo long as we follow it. When we walk without this Light, in the Night of our own Will, we cannot avoid either fumbling or going aftray. Let thy Will, O Lord, be always the Lamp which may inlighten my Steps, and the Light which may direct me in thy Ways. Moft fenfibly, O LORD, I know My Night of Death approaches faft: MyTime for Work, my Courfe below, Is in another Moment paft.

O then cut short thy Work of Grace,
This Moment finish it in me,
And let the next conclude my Race,
And bring me to my Goal and Thee.

WHO gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all Iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar People, zealous of good Works, Titus ii. 14.

Chriftianity does not confift in fome tranfient Act of Piety, nor in an outward Forbearance from Evil, nor in a bare Performance of outward Duties, but in an inward permanent and inviolable Confecration, that feparating us from the Love of Riches, Honours, and Pleasures, unites us to GOD, by a Love which renders us Worshippers in Spirit and in Truth, and faithful Imitators of his Son. Grant, O my GOD, that I may know,

value, love, and preferve, at the Expence of all Things, fo glorious a Confecration. Woe unto me, if I ever take away my Heart from Thee to give it to the World and Sin. O JESUS, Priest and Victim of my God, it belongs to thee to preferve my Confecration, fince it is by and in thee I am confecrated to him.

'Tis this must banish my Complaints,
Muft make an End of Sin in me;
I grant it, the faint-hearted Saints,

That only Death can set me free: But whose shall purge my inbred Sin? The Death of GoD, and not of Man.

AND whatsoever ye do in Word or Deed, do all in the Name

of the Lord Jefus, giving Thanks to God and the Father by Him, Col. iii. 17.

Good GOD! what is a Christian, and who is there who lives like a Christian, if all his Words and Actions ought to be a Sacrifice of Thanksgiving, offered to Goo by JESUS CHRIST, as the Chriftian's high Prieft and Mediator; in JESUS CHRIST as his Temple; upon JESUS CHRIST as his Altar; according to JESUS CHRIST as the Pattern of a Chriftian: under JESUS CHRIST, as his Lord and King in the Spirit, the Intentions, the Motives, the Dif pofitions; and the End of JESUS CHRIST as his Head, with Dependence upon JESUS CHRIST, from whom proceeds all the Power of our Actions. LORD JESUS CHRIST grant that I may be this happy Chriftian, devoted to Thee all my Life according to thy Word, Amen.

To the Glory of the LORD,
How can I all Things do?
Father, speak my Soul reftor'd,
Create my Heart anew.

When thine Image I retrieve,

United to my Saviour, I
Shall in JESU's Spirit live,

And in his Spirit die.

IF ye love me, keep my Commandments, John xiv. 15.

Let us not flatter ourselves that we love God, if we do not keep his Commandments; neither let us flatter ourselves that we can fulfil his Commandments, if we do not love him. --- The Obfervance of the Law is a Proof of our Love; but Love is the Principle of that Obfervance. Examine y ur Hearts, examine your Works, if you are defirous to know what you are in the Sight of God. The one must be answerable to the other. God grant they may be both found in me.

Strangers to thy Love are they
Who call it Bondage to obey :
Be it our Delight to prove
Obedience is the Truth of Love:

Love which no Compulfion knows,
But freely from the Fountain flows,
Returns fpontaneous to the Skies,
Pure as the Streams of Paradise.

PEACE I leave with you, my Peace I give unto you: not as the World giveth, give I unto you. Let not your Heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid, John xiv. 27.

The Peace of the World confifts in worldly Reft, Joy, Plenty, and Delights: the Peace of CHRIST, in Submiffion to the Will of GOD, in the Joy of Love. The World gives Peace only in fruitlefs and barren De fires; or elfe gives only a falfe and counterfeit Peace; but CHRIST performs what he fpeaks, and his Words produce their Effect even in the Heart, by fortifying it against the Threats of the World, and against every Thing which may difturb or interrupt its Friendship with GoD Let thofe who love the World feek that Peace which it gives; Thine, O JESUS, is fufficient for me. Put me into Poffeffion of it, I beseech thee. fince thou art pleased I fhould enjoy it by Legacy of thy Will, by a Deed of Gift made in thy Life Time, and by Right of Inheritance.

We own the Promife, Prince of Grace,

Tho' earthly Helpers die,
And animate our fainting Hearts

While Chrift our Friend is nigh.

The King of Fears can do no more

Than stop our mortal Breath;
But JESUS gives a nobler Life,
That cannot yield to Death.
