DISTRICT OF MASSACHUSETTS, TO WIT: BE it remembered, That on the eleventh day of June, A. D. 1814, and in the thirty-eighth year of the Independence of the United States of America, Thomas B. Wait and Sons, of the said district, have deposited in this office the title of a book, the right whereof they claim as proprietors in the words following, to wit: "Sacred Extracts from the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, for the more convenient attainment of a knowledge of the Inspired Writers. For the use of schools. And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation, through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy, iii. 15." In conformity to the act of the Congress of the United States, intitled"An act for the encouragement of learning, by securing the copies of Maps, Charts, and Books, to the authors and proprietors of such copies, during the times therein mentioned;" and also to an act intitled, "An act supplementary to an act, intitled, an act for the encouragement of learning, by securing the copies of Maps, Charts, and Books, to the authors and proprietors of such copies during the times therein mentioned; and extending the benefits thereof to the Arts of Designing, Engraving, and Etching Historical, and other Prints." WILLIAM S. SHAW, RECOMMENDATIONS. From the Rev. Dr. Dwight, President of Yale College. MESSRS. T. B. WAIT AND SONS, I HAVE examined the "Sacred Extracts from the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments." The volume is, in my opinion, formed with a judicious design; and the selections, which it contains, are made with felicity. Both are worthy of the very respectable Editor, to whom the public is indebted for the book; and will, I doubt not, extensively promote the pious and benevolent design, announced in the advertisement, and so visible in the choice of its contents. I am, Gentlemen, very respectfully, yours &c. New-Haven, 16th July, 1814. From the Rev. Dr. Appleton, President of Bowdoin College. "SACRED EXTRACTS from the Scriptures" will be found, I am persuaded, a valuable acquisition to our schools. In making this selection, the author professes to have endeavoured "to put off all prejudices and prepossessions," and to have acted under a deep impression, that "the ground was holy." The reader, in comparing different parts of the "Ex tracts," will find, it is believed, nothing inconsistent with this profession. To those who are alive to the best interests of the community, it affords no ordinary pleasure to observe, that the improvement of common schools is consulted by men of literature, talents, and reputa tion. JESSE APPLETON. Bowdoin College, July 7, 1814. From the Rev. Dr. Morse. THE subscriber has examined this volume of "Sacred Extracts from the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments," and is happy in expressing his decided approbation both of the object and execution of the work. The selection is judicious, and bears every mark of "uprightness and impartiality" in its respectable editor. If generally introduced into our schools, as a reading book, as he hopes it will be, and for which purpose it is well adapted, it cannot fail to be useful, by the blessing of God, in exciting in the minds of youth a relish for the Word of Life, and of making many of them wise to salvation, through faith which is in Jesus' Christ. JEDIDIAH MORSE. Charlestown, June 21, 1814. From the Rev. Mr. Huntington, of Boston. MESSRS. T. B. WAIT AND SONS, THE Custom of using the Bible as a school-book, which, till of late years, universally prevailed in this part of our country, I have always regar with veneration and pleasure. Nor have the objec tions which are offered against it, and which have operated to its too general abandonment, ever appeared to me of sufficient weight to justify a measure, calculated to keep a great portion of our youth in ignorance of that precious volume, which is able to make them wise unto salvation through faith that is in Christ.". It affords me, therefore, the sincerest satisfaction to learn, that you are about publishing a work, against which those objections, the most plausible of them at least, can have no force; and which, if generally introduced into our schools, will be likely, under the blessing of God, to render them nurseries not only of human, but Divine science. From the very cursory examination which I have given to the Compend, it appears to me to be éxecuted with great judgment and impartiality; and with no other design than that, in which all who value the uncorrupted Word of God, and the best interests of the rising generation, will rejoice. JOSHUA HUNTINGTON. Boston, June 21, 1814. From the Rev. Dr. Baldwin. I HAVE in a brief and cursory manner run my eye over this little volume, and as far as I am able to judge, the selection appears candid and judicious, comprizing the principal articles of Christian The ology. Should any one imagine, that some things are omitted which he deems important, he ought to remember, that "extracts" never contain the whole. The Bible is at hand, which he may consult at his Heisure. |
