Different persons have assigned different dates to St. Mark's Gospel; but as it is generally agreed that it was written whilst St. Mark was with St. Peter at Rome, and as there is no authority for supposing that St. Peter was in that city till the year 64, the publication of this Gospel may be placed about the year 65.

CHAP. I.

LUKE, i. 35: And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee; therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee, shall be called the Son of God. JOHN, i. 34: And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. HEB. i. 1, 2: God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds. 5 And there went out unto him all the land of Judæa, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, "confessing their sins.

JOHN, i. 15, 23: John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This is he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me, is preferred before me; for he was before me. He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the LORD, as said the prophet Esaias.

MAT. iii. 1: In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judæa. LUKE, iii. 3: He came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance, for the remission of sins. JOHN, iii. 23: John also was baptizing in Ænon, near to Salim, because there was much water there and they came, and were baptized.

Acts, xix. 4: John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. fACTS, xxii. 16: Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

7 And preached, saying, "There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid: I said, I will confess, my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. PRO. xxviii. 13: He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them, shall have mercy. 1 Joux, i. 8-10: If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

MAT. iii. 4: The same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

LEV. xi. 22: These of them ye may eat: the locust after his kind, and the bald locust after his kind.

m MAT. iii. 11: I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance; but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire. JOHN, i. 27: He it is who coming after me, is preferred before me, whose shoes' latchet I am not worthy to unloose. Acтs, xiii. 25: And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose.

• ISA. xliv. 3: I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring. JOEL, ii. 28: It shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. 1 COR. xii. 13: By one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles.

ISA. xlii. 1: Behold, my servant, whom I uphold, mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth, I have put my spirit upon him, and he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. MAT. iii. 16: And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water; and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him. JOHN, i. 32: And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

Ps. ii. 7: I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. MAT. iii. 17: Lo, a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. MARK, ix. 7 : There was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. See on MAT. iii. 17.

MAT. iv. 11: Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

A. D. 30. 14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into "Galilee, preaching the Gospel of the kingdom of God.

15 And saying, The time is " fulfilled," and the *kingdom of God is at hand: 'repent ye, and believe the Gospel.

DAN. ii. 44: And in the days of these kings, shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. do. ix. 25: Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. Y ACTS, ii. 38: Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized, every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
