CHRONOLOGY.

THIS brief chronology is intended to shew as simply as possible the direct line of genealogy from Adam to our blessed Saviour; and to give the most authentic data we possess to some of those most wonderful and mysterious events with which the Almighty Creator, in his just wrath or mercy, has visited the irreclaimable sinfulness or the obedient and repentant spirit of his created subjects. 4004 The Creation - Adam and Eve in Paradise - The Fall by Disobedience, thereby becoming subject to Sin and Death-The Promise-The Loss of Paradise-The First Death by Sin and Envy — Cain slays his Brother Abel.

The thoughts and imaginations of men's hearts

2349 Noah, his wife, and Shem, Ham, and Japheth, Noah's sons, and their wives, enter the ark as commanded, and are saved from the Deluge, which continues 150 days.

2349 Noah lived after the Deluge 350 years-Shem, his son, lived after the Deluge 500 years, and therefore was living 147 years after the birth of Abraham, his direct descendant-Ham was the father of Cush, who was the father of Nimrod.

2247 Babel built-The presumption of Man punished by the Confusion of Languages.

2218 Nimrod about this time began to be a mighty man and hunter, and laid the foundation of the Assyrian Monarchy. Nineveh built in next

century.

2188 Mizraim, the grandson of Ham, leads colonies into Egypt, and founds that Kingdom.

2056 Abram, the son of Terah, born in a direct line from Shem.

1996 Abram took Sarai his wife and went forth from Ur of the Chaldees, with his father Terah and brother Lot, to go to Canaan.

1898 The Covenant made with Abram: his name and the name of his wife changed to Abraham and Sarah, and a son promised them.

1872 Abraham makes an offering of his son Isaac, and obtains the promise, "In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed."

1857 Isaac, being 40 years old, takes Rebekah to wife. 1837 Jacob and Esau born.

1729 Joseph, son of Jacob, sold to Ishmaelites and brought into Egypt.

1716 Isaac dies 180 years old.

1707 Jacob's ten sons sent into Egypt to buy corn. 1706 Jacob and all his sons settle in the land of Goshen. 1689 Jacob calleth his sons together to bless them ere he dies (147 years old), and prophetically points out Judah's superiority, "The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come.'

1635 Joseph dies in Egypt aged 110 years-was embalmed; he exacted a promise that his bones

should be carried out of Egypt to be laid with his fathers.

1706 The Israelites multiply in Egypt and begin to be persecuted.

1571 Moses born, and is protected by Pharaoh's daughter. 1531 Moses, 40 years old, slays an Egyptian and flees into the land of Midian Marries Zipporah,

daughter of Jethro, a priest.

1491 Moses sent by God to deliver the Israelites from bondage by divers signs and wonders - The Passover instituted-The Ten Commandments given at Mount Sinai.

1452 The Promised Land defined, and the names of the men appointed to divide it.

1451 Moses died, aged 120 years, with full unimpaired faculties, and his place of sepulchre was not known.

1426 Joshua the son of Nun died, 110 years old.

Samson is born.

1085 David, son of Jesse in a direct line from Abraham, born at Bethlehem Judah.

1048 David made King of Israel, reigned 40 years. 1033 Solomon, son of Ďavid and Bathsheba, born. 1008 Solomon completes the Temple.

1004 Solomon dedicates the Temple, and invokes a sublime blessing, with prayers and sacrifice.

955 Asa reigns in Judah.

914 Jehoshaphat his son succeeds.

726 Hezekiah began to reign at 25 years of age. 713 Invaded by Sennacherib, King of Assyria, whose army is destroyed by God, in whom King Hezekiah puts his trust.

698 Manasseh, 12 years old, began to reign and reigned fifty-five years, rebuilding the altars and establishing the grossest idolatry-passing his children through the fire, and doing worse than the heathen-but when afflicted he humbled himself and repented, and God in his mercy was entreated of him.

Josiah was eight years old, and reigned 31 years, restoring the true worship of God, and removing all idolatry.

610 Eliakim, son of Josiah and brother of Jehoahaz, made King of Judah by the King of Egypt instead of Jehoahaz, whom he carried into Egypt -He turned Eliakim's name to Jehoiakim, and at 25 years of age he began his evil reign.

607 Against him came Nebuchadnezzar, and carried him to Babylon with the vessels of the House of the Lord, and put them in his temple at Babylon. 599 Jehoiakim, his son, reigned 3 months and 10 days, and was also carried off to Babylon with all the goodly vessels of the Temple and treasures Zedekiah, his brother, made King

593 The Jews carried into captivity for their idolatry and general wickedness.

588 The Temple and Jerusalem destroyed.

538 The Assyrian Empire falls to Cyrus the Mede, and Darius the Persian, which thenceforward merges in the Persian Empire.

536 Cyrus issues proclamation to rebuild the Temple. 534 Daniel, the prophet at Babylon, prophesies the period of the Saviour's coming.

515 The second Temple finished.

Artaxerxes sends Nehemiah with letters and commission to rebuild and restore the wall of Jerusalem.

397 Malachi, the last of the prophets, reproves the people for their wickedness, and in sublime words depicts the coming of the Saviour.

Alexander the Great conquers Persia, and founds the Macedonian and Grecian Empires during his short reign of six years and ten months; he once offers sacrifice in the Temple at Jerusalem, according to the Jewish rites-Dies at Babylon.

100 The Roman Empire gradually creeping into power. 63 Pompey, the Roman Triumvir, takes Jerusalem and makes the Jews tributary to Rome.

40 Herod the Great made King of Judea by the Romans. 31 The Emperor Augustus now governs the world. A Universal Peace, and the Temple of Janus shut. Correction of the Calendar by order of Augustus.
