The journeys of the Ifraelites. cording to their journeys, by the command. ment of the LORD: and thefe are their journeys according to their goings out.

3 And they departed from Ramefes in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month: on the morrow after the paflover, the children of Ifrael went out with an high hand in the fight of all the Egyptians.

4 (For the Egyptians buried all their firstborn, which the LORD had fmitten among them: upon their gods alfo the LORD executed judgments)

5 And the children of Ifrael removed from Ramefes, and pitched in Succoth.

6 And they departed from Succoth, and pitched in Etham, which is in the edge of the wilderness.

And they removed from Etham, and turned again unto Pi-hahiroth, which before Baal zephon: and they pitched before Migdol.

8 And they departed from before Pi-hahiroth, and paffed through the midst of the fea, into the wilderness, and went three days journey in the wilderness of Etham, and pitched in Marah.

9 And they removed from Marah, and came unto Elim and in Elim were twelve fountains of water, and threefcore and ten palm-trees; and they pitched there.

10 And they removed from Elim, and encamped by the Red fea.

11 And they removed from the Red fea, and encamped in the wildernels of Sin. 12 And they took their journey out of the wilderness of Sin,and encamped in Dophkah. 13 And they departed from Dophkah and encamped in Alufh.

14 And they removed from Alufh, and encamped at Rephidim, where was no water for the people to drink.

15 And they departed from Rephidim,and pitched in the wildernets of Sinai.

16 And they removed from the defert of Sinai, and pitched at Kibroth-hattaavah. 17 And they departed from Kibroth-hat saavah, and encamped at Hazeroth.

18 And they departed from Hazeroth, and pitched in Rithmah.

19 And they departed from Rithmah, and pitched at Kimmon-parez.

20 And they departed from Rimmon-parez, and pitched in Libnah.

21 And they removed from Libnah, and pitched at Riffah.

22 And they journeyed from Riffah, pitched in Kehelathah.

23 And they went from. Kehelathah, and pitched in mount Shapher.

24 And they removed from mount Shapher, and encamped in Haradah.

25 And they removed from Haradah, and pitched in Makheloth.

26 And they removed from Makheloth, and encamped at Tahath.

27 And they departed from Tahath, pitched at Tarah.

28 And they removed from Tarah, pitched in Mithcah..

29. And they went from Mithcah, pitched in Hafhmonah.

The Canaanites to be destroyed. pitched in Bene-jaakan. 31 And they departed from Moferoth, and

32 And they removed from Bene-jaakan, and encamped at Hor-hagidgad.

33 And they went from Hor-hagidgad, and pitched in Jotbathah.

34 And they removed from fotbathah,and encamped at Ebronah.

35 And they departed from Ebronah, and encamped at Ezion-gaber.

36 And they removed from Ezion-gaber, and pitched in the wilderness of Zin, which Kadeh.

37 And they removed from Kadeh, and pitched in mount Hor, in the edge of the land of Edom.

38 And Aaron the priest went up into mount Hor, at the commandment of the LORD, and died there in the fortieth year, after the children of Ifrael were come out of the land of Egypt, in the first day of the fifth month.

39 And Aaron was an hundred and twenty and three years old, when he died in mount Hor.

40 And king Arad the Canaanite (which dwelt in the fouth in the land of Canaan) heard of the coming of the children of Il rael

41 And they departed from mount Hor and pitched in Zalmonah.

47 And they removed from Almon-diblathaim, and pitched in the mountains of A barim, before Nebo.

48 And they departed from the mountains of Abarim, and pitched in the plains of Mo ab, by Jordan, near Jericho.

49 And they pitched by Jordan from Bethjefimoth,even unto Abel-hittim,in the plains of Moab.

So q And the LORD fpake unto Mofes, in the plains of Moab, by Jordan near Jericho, laying

51 Speak unto the children of Israel, and fay unto them, When ye are paffed over Jordán, in the land of Canaan;

52 Then ye shall drive out all the inhabi tants of the land from before you, and de ftroy all their pictures, and destroy all their molten images, and quite pluck down all their high places.

53 And ye fhall difpoffefs the inhabitants of the land, and dwell therein: for I have given you the land to poffefs it.

$4 And ye fhall divide the land by lot, for an inheritance among your familles,and to the mo ye fhall give the more inheritance, and, to the fewer ye fhall give the lefs inheri tance: every mans inheritance fhall be in the place where his lot falleth; according to the tribes of your fathers, ye fhall inherit.

55 But if ye will not drive out the inha bitants of the land from before you; then

it' fhall come to pals, that thofe which ye let remain of them, shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your fides, and fhall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.

56 Moreover, it fhall come to pass, that I fhall do unto you, as I thought to do unto them.

CHAP. XXXIV.

1 The borders of the land. 16 The names of the men which fhall divide it.

The Levites cities. Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Je phunneh.

20 And of the tribe of the children of Simeon, Shemuel the fon of Ammihud. 21 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the fon of Chiflon.

22 And the prince of the tribe of the children of Dan, Bukki the fon of Jogli.

23 The prince of the children of Jofeph, for the tribe of the children of Manafieh,

And the LORD fake unto Mofes, faying, Haniel the fon of Ephodn

2 Command the children Ifrael, and fay unto them, When ye come into the land of Canaan (this is the tand that fhall fall unto you for an inheritance, even the land of Canaan with the coafts thereof)

3 Then your fouth-quarter fhall be from the wilderness of Zin, along by the coaft of Edom, and your fouth-border fhall be the outmost coast of the falt fea eaft-ward.

4 And your border fhall turn from the fouth to the alcent of Akrabbim, and pafs on to Zin: and the going forth thereof fhall be from the fouth to Kadefh-barnea, and fhall go on to Hazar-addar, and pass on to Azmon.

5 And the border fhall fetch a compafs from Azmon unto the rive of Egypt, and the goings out of it fhall be at the Tea."

6 And as for the western border, you shall even have the great fea for a border: this thall be your weft-border.

7 And this fhall be your north-border; from the great fea, you thall point out for you mount Hor.

8 From mount Hor ye fhall point out your border unto the entrance of Hamath: and the goings forth of the border shall be to Zedad. 9And the border fhall go on to Ziphron, and the goings out of it thall be at Hazarenan: this fhall be your north-border.

10 And ye shall point out your caft-border from Hazar-enan to Shepham.

11 And the coaft fhall go down from She pham to Riblah, on the calt-fide of Ain; and the border hall defcend,and fhall reach unto the fide of the fea of Chinnereth east-ward. 12 And the border fhall go down to Joraan, and the goings out of it fhall be at the falt fea: This fhall be your land with the coafts thereof round about.

13 And Mofes commanded the children of Ifrael, faying, This the land which ye hall inherit by lot, which the LORD commanded to give unto the nine tribes, and to the half-tribe.

14 For the tribe of the children of Reuben, according to the house of their fathers, and the tribe of the children of Gad, according to the house of their fathers, have received their inheritance, and half the tribe of Manaffeh have received their inheritance.

15 The two tribes and the half-tribe have received their inheritance on this fide for dan near Jericho, caft-ward, toward the funrifing.

164 And the LORD fpake unto Mofes, faying

17 Thefe are the names of the men which fhall divide the land unto you: Eleazar the prieft, and Joshua the fan of Nun.

18 And ye thall take one prince of every tribe, to divide the land by inheritance. 19 And the names of the men are thefe:

24 And the prince of the tribe of the children of Ephraim, Kemuel the fon of Shiphtan. 25 And the prince of the tribe of the children of Zebulun, Elizaphan the fon of Par

nach.

26 And the prince of the tribe of the chil.dren of Iffachar, Paltiel the fon of Azzan. 27 And the prince of the tribe of the chil dren of Alher, Ahihud the fon of Shelomi. 28 And the prince of the tribe of the children of Naphtali, Pedahel the fon of Aminihud.

29 Thefe are they whom the LORD commanded to divide the inheritance unto the children of Ifrael in the land of Canaan. CHA P. XXXV.

I Eight and forty cities given to the Levites 6 Six of them to be cities of refuge. 9 The laws of murder.

And the FORD fpake unto Mofes in the

plains of Moab, by Jordan near Jericho,

faying,

2 Command the children of Ifrael, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their poffeffion, cities to dwell in and ye fhall give all unto the Levites fuburbs for the cities round about them.

3 And the cities fhall they have to dwell in,and the fuburbs of them fhall be for their cattel, and for their goods, and for all their beafts.

4 And the fuburbs of the cities which ye fhall give unto the Levites, fhall reach from the wall of the city and outward, a thou fand cubits round about.

5 And ye fhall mealure from without the city on the east-fide two thousand cubits, and on the fouth-fide two thoufand cubits and on the weft-fide two thoufand cubits, and on the north-fide two thoufand cubits: and the city fhall be in the midft: this shall be to them the fuburbs of the cities.

6 And among the cities which ye fhall gives unto the Levites there fhall be fix cities for refuge, which ye fhall appoint for the man flayer, that he may flee thither: and to them ye'fhall add forty and two cities.

So all the cities which ye fhall give to the Levites, fhall be forty and eight cities: them fhall ye give with their fuburbs.

8 And the cities which ye thall give, ha be of the poffeflion of the children of Ifrael: from them that have many, ye shall give many; but from them that have few, ye fhall give few every one thall give of his cities unto the Levites, according to his inheri tance which he inheriteth.

99 And the LORD fpake unto Moses, say- · ing,

NUMBERS. 11 Then ye thall appoint you cities, to be cities of refuge for you; that the flayer may dec thither whin killeth any perfon at un

12 An they fhall be unto you cities for refuge from the avenger; that the manMayer diet, until he ftand before the congregation in judgment.

13 And of thefe cities which ye fhall give, fix cities hall ye have for refuge.

14 Ye fhill give three cities on this fide Jordan, and three cities hall ye give in the of Cain, which fhall be cities of refage.

15 Thefe fix cities fhall be a refuge, both for the children of Ifrael, and for the ftranger, and for the fojourner among them: that every one that killeth any perfon unawares may flee thither.

16 And if he fmite him with an inftrument of iron (fo that he die) he is a murderer: the murderer fhall furely be put to death...

17 And if he finite him with throwing a Itone, (wherewith he may die) and he die,

he is a murderer: the murderer fhall furely

be put to death.

18 Or if he finite him with an hand-wea pon of wood (wherewith he may die) and fre die, he is a murderer: the murderer fhall furely be put to death.

19 The revenger of blood himself thall May the murderer: when he meeteth him, he fhall flay him.

20 But if he thruft him of hatred, or hurl at him by Jaying of wait, that he die;

21 Or in enmity fmite him with his hand, that he die: he that fmote him fhall furely be put to death; for he is a murderer: the revenger of blood fhall flay the murderer, when he meeteth him.

22 But if he thruft him fuddenly without enmity, or have caft upon him any thing without laying of wait;

23 Or with any ftone wherewith a man may die, feeing him not, and caft it upon him that he die, and was not his enemy, neither fought his harm:

24 Then the congregation thall Judge between the flayer, and the revenger of blood, according to thefe judgments.

25 And the Congregation fhall deliver the flayer out of the hand of the revenger of blood, and the congregation fhall restore him to the city of his refuge, whither he was fled and he fhall abide in it unto the death of the high priest, which was anointed with the holy oyl.

26 But if the flayer fhall at any time come without the borders of the city of his refuge, whither he was fled;

27 And the revenger of blood find him without the borders of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the flayer; he fhall not be guilty of blood:

Of the inheritance of daughters. thall be put to death by the mouth of wit30 Whofo killeth any perfon, the murderer nelles: but one withefs fhall not teftifie against any perfon, to caufe him to die.

on for the life of a murderer, which is guil31 Moreover, ye fhall take no fatisfactity of death: but he thall be furely put to: death.

32. And ye fhall take no fatisfaction for: him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he fhould come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.

28 Becaule he thould have remained in the city of his refuge, until the death of the high priest, but after the death of the high prieft, the flayer shall return into the land: of his poffeffion.

29 So thefe things thall be for a ftatute of Judgment unto you, throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

33 So ye shall not pollute the land where and the land cannot be cleaned of the blood in ye are for blood it defileth the land: that is fhed therein, but by the blood of him that fhed it.

34 Defile not therefore the land which ye. LORD dwell among the children of Ifrael. fhall inhabit, wherein I dwell: for I the CHAP. XXXVI.

1 The inconvenience of the inheritance of dangh ters, 5 is remedied by marrying in their own tribes.

ANd the chief fathers of the families of

the children of Gilead, the fon of Mathe fons of Jofeph, came near, and fpake bechir, the son of Manaffeh, of the families of fore Mofes, and before the princes the chief fathers of the children of Ifrael:

2 And they faid, The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for an inheritance by lot to the children of Ifrael: and my lord inheritance of Zelophehad our brother, unwas commanded by the LORD, to give the to his daughters.

conimand concerning the daughters of Zelo 6 This is the thing which the LORD doth phehad, faying, Let them marry to whom they think beft; only to the family of the tribe of their father hall they marry:

7 So fhall not the inheritance of the children of Ifrael remove from tribe to tribe :: for every one of the children of Ifrael fhall keep himfelf to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

8 And every daughter that poffeffeth an Ifrael, fhall be wife unto one of the family inheritance in any tribe of the children of of the tribe of her father, that the children. of Ifrael may enjoy every man the inheri tance of his fathers.

9. Neither thall the inheritance remove. from one tribe to another tribe; but every one of the tribes of the children of Ifrael thall keep himfeif to his own inheritance.

I Mofes in the end of the fortieth year briefly rehearseth the story, 6 of Gods promife. 34 Hr anger for their incredulity, 41 and difobedience.

HESE be the words which Mofes fpake unto all Ifrael on this fide Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red Jea, between Paran and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.

2 (There are eleven days journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadethbarnea)

3 And it came to pals in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Mofes fpake unto the children of Ifrael, according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them;

4 After he had flain Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Hefhbon, and Og the king of Bafhan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei.

5.On this fide Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, faying, 6. The LORD our God fpake unto us in Horeb, faying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount:

Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the fouth, and by the fea-fide, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river the river Euphrates.

8 Behold, I have let the land before you go in and poffefs the land which the LORD Iware unto your fathers, Abraham, Ifaac, and Jacob, to give unto thein, and to their feed after them.

11 (The LORD God of your fathers make you a thousand times fo many mo as ye are, and bless you as he hath promiled you)

12 How can I my felf alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your ftrife?

13 Take ye wife men and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.

14 And ye anfwered me,and faid, The thing which thou haft fpoken, good for us to do. 15 So I took the chief of your tribes, wife men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thoufands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes.

199 And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terriblewildernefs, which you faw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the LORD. our God commanded us; and we came to Kadefh-barnea.

16 And I charged your judges at that time, Taying, Hear the canfes between your bres

20 And I faid unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which the LORD our God doth give unto us.

21 Behold, the LORD thy God hath fet the land before thee: go up and poffefs it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath faid unto thee; fear not, neither be difcouraged.

22 9 And ye came near unto me every one. of you, and faid, we will fend men before us, and they fhall fearch us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come.

23 And the faying pleafed me well I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe. 24 And they turned and went up into the. mountain, and came unto the valley of Efhcol, and fearched it out.

25 And they took of the fruit of the land. in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and faid, It a good land, which the LORD our God doth give us.

26 Notwithstanding, ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God.

27 And ye murmured in your tents, and faid, Because the LORD hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.

28 Whither fhall we go up? our brethren have difcouraged our heart, faying, The people is greater and taller than we, the cities are great and walled up to heaven, and more-over we have feen the fons of the Anakims there.

29 Then I faid unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them.

30 The LORD your God which goeth before you, he fhall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes:

31 And in the wilderness, where thou haft feen how that the LORD thy God bare thee as a man doth bear his fon, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place.. 32.Yer

33 Who went in the way, before you to fearch you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night to fhew you by what way ye fhould go, and in a cloud by day..

34 And the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and fware, faying, 35 Surely there fhall not one of these men. of this evil generation fee that good land, which I fware to give unto your fathers;

36 Save Caleb the fon of Jephunneh he fhall fee it, and to him will I give the land that he hath troden upon, and to his children, becaufe he hath wholly followed the LORD. 37 Allo the LORD was angry with me for your fakes, faying, Thou alio fhalt not go in thither.

38 But Jofhua the fon of Nun, which standeth before thee, he fhall go in thither. En courage him: for he thall caufe Ifrael to inherit it.

39 Moreover, your little ones, which ye faid fhould be a prey, and your children which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they fhall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they thall poffefs it.

40 But as for you, turn ye, and take your journey into the wildernels, by the way of the Red fea.

41 Then ye anfwered and faid unto me, We have finned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.

42 And the LORD faid unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight, for I am not among you; left ye be fmitten before your

enemies.

43 So I fpake unto you, and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and went prefumptuously up into the hill.

44 And the Amorites which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chafed you as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even unto Horniah.

45 And ye returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD would not hearkenso your voice, nor give ear unto you.

46 So ye abode in Kadeth many days, according unto the days that ye abode there. CHAP. II.

2 The flory is continued touching the. Edomites, 9 the Moabites, 17 the Ammonites, 24 and Sibon the Amorite.

Tinto the wildernes, by the way of the Hen we journey Red fea, as the LORD fpake unto me and we compaffed mount Seir many days.

2 And the LORD fpake unto me, faying, 3 Ye have compaffed this mountain fong enough turn you north-ward.

4 And command thou the people, faying, Ye are to pass through the coaft of your bre thren the children of Efau, which dwell in Seir, and they fhall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto your felves therefore.

Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no not fo much as a foot-breadth, because I have given mount Seir unto Blau for a poffeflion.

touching the Edomités. 6 Ye fhall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall alfo buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.

7 For the LORD thy God hath bleffed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: thefe forty years the LORD thy God bath been with thee, thou haft lacked nothing.

8 And when we paffed by from our brethren the children of Efau, which dwelt in Seir, through the way of the plain from Elath, and from Ezion-gaber, we turned and paffed by the way of the wildernefs of Moab.

9 And the LORD faid unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither contend with them in battel: for I will not give thee of their land for a poffeffion, becaufe I have given Ar un-... to the children of Lot for a poffellion.

10 The Emims dwelt therein in times paft, a people great, and many, and tall as the Anakims;

11 Which alfo were accounted giants as the Anakims, but the Moabites call them Emims.

12 The Horims alfo dwelt in Seir before time, but the children of Etau fucceeded them when they had deftroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their ftead, as Ifrael did unto the land of his poffeffion, which the LORD gave unto them.

13 Now rife up, faid I, and get you over the brook Zered: and we went over the brook Zered.

14 And the space in which we came from Kadefh-barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wafted out from among the hoft, as the.. LORD fware unto them.

15 For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to deftroy them from among. the hoft, until they were confumed.

16. So it came to pafs, when all the men of war were confumed and dead from among the people,

17 That the LORD spake unto me, fay

ing,

18 Thou art to pafs over through Ar, the coaft of Moab, this day.

19 And when thou comeft nigh over against the children of Ammon, diftrefs them not, nor meddle with them for I will not give. thee of the land of the children of Ammon any. poffeffion, becaufe I have given it unto the children of Lot for a poffeflion.

20 (That allo was accounted a land of giants, giants dwelt therein in old time, and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims, the Anakins, but the Lok Ddytroyed them people great, and many, and before them, and they fucceeded them, and dwelt in their stead:

22. As he did to the children of Efaw which dwelt in Seir, when he destroyed the Horims from before them, and they fucceeded them, and dwelt in their ftead even un-to this day:

23 And the Avims which dwelt in Haze rim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims which came forth out of Caphtor, deftroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)

24 9 Rife ye up, take your journey, and pals over the river Arnon: behold, I have given into thy hand Sihon the Amorite king
