CHAP. XXII.

Balaks first meage for Balaam is rejected; 15 His fecond obtaineth: 22 An angel would have flain him, if his af's had not faved him. 36 Balak entertaineth him.

Nd the children of Ifrael fet forward,

A and pitched in the plains of Moab, on this fide Jordan by Jericho.

24 And Balak the fon of Zippor faw all that Ifrael had done to the Amorites.

3 And Moab was fore afraid of the people, because they were many and Moab was diftreffed, becaufe of the children of Ifrael.

4 And Moab faid unto the elders of Midian, Now fhall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up the grafs of the field. And Balak the fan of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.

He lent meffengers therefore unto Balaam the fon of Beor, to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, faying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me.

6 Come now therefore, I pray thee, curfe me this people, for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I fhall prevail, that we may fmite them, and that I may drive them out of the land for I wot that he whom thou bleffeft, bleffed, and he whom thou curfeft, is curfed.

7 And the elders of Moab, and the elders of Midian departed,with the rewards of divina tion in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and ipake unto him the words of Balak. 8 And he faid unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again as the LORD fhall fpeak unto me: And the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.

9 And God came unto Balaam, and faid, What men are thefe with thee?

10 And Balaam faid unto God, Balak the fon of Zippor, king of Moab, hath fent unto me, faying,

11 Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: Come now, curfe me them; peradventure I fhall be able to overcome them, and drive

them out.

12 And God faid unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them, thou shalt not curfe the people for they are blefied.

Balak fendeth for Balaam.

13 And Balaam rofe up in the morning, and faid unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land: for the LORD refufeth to give me leave to go with you.

14 And the princes of Moab rofe up, and they went unto Balak, and faid, Balaam refufeth to come with us.

159 And Balak fent yet again princes, mo, and more honourable than they.

16 And they came to Balaam, and faid to him, Thus faith Balak the fon of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:

17 For I will promote thee unto very great honour, and I will do whatfoever thou fayest unto me: Come therefore, I pray thee, curfe me this people.

18 And Balaam answered and faid unto the fervants of Balak, If Balak would give me his houfe full of filver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do lefs or more.

19 Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye alfo here this night, that I may know what the LORD will fay unto me more.

and faid unto him, If the men come to call

20 And God came unto Balaam at night,

thee, rife up, and go with them; but yet the word which I fhall fay unto thee, that fhalt

thou do.

21 And Balaam rofe up in the morning, and faddled his afs, and went with the prin ces of Moab.

22 4 And Gods anger was kindled because he went and the angel of the LORD ftood in the way for an adversary against him: Now he was riding upon his afs, and his two fervants were with him.

23 And the afs faw the angel of the LORD ftanding in the way, and his fword drawn in his hand and the afs turned afide out of the way,and went into the field: and Balaam fimote the afs to turn her into the way.

24 But the angel of the LORD ftood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this fide, and a wall on that fide.

25 And when the afs faw the angel of the LORD, fhe thruft her felf unto the wall, and crufht Balaams foot against the wall: and he fmote her again.

26 And the angel of the LORD went further, and flood in a narrow place, where mas no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.

27 And when the afs faw the angel of the LORD, he fell down under Balaam: and Balaams anger was kindled, and he fmote the afs with a ftaff.

28 And the LORD opened the mouth of the als, and the faid unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou haft fmitten me these three times?

29 And Balaam faid unto the afs, Becaufe thou haft mocked me: I would there were a fword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.

30 And the afs faid unto Balaam, Am not I thine afs, upon which thou haft ridden ever fince I was thine, unto this day? was I ever wont to do fo unto thee? And he faid, Nay.

31 Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he faw the angel of the LORD ftanding in the way, and his fword drawn

in his hand and he bowed down his head, ple fhall dwell alone, and fhall not be reckon and fell flat on his face. ed among the nations.

32 And the angel of the LORD faid unto him, Wherefore haft thou fmitten thine afs. thefe three times? Behold, I went out to withstand thee, becaufe thy way is perverfe

before me.

33 And the afs faw me, and turned from me these three times: unless the had turned from me, furely now allo I had flain thee, and faved her alive.

34 And Balam faid unto the angel of the LORD, I have finned; for I knew not that thou ftoodeft in the way against me now therefore if it difpleafe thee, I will get me back again.

35 And the angel of the LORD faid unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the I word that I fhall fpeak unto thee, that thou fhalt fpeak: Sa Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

364 And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto a a city of Moab, which in the border of Arnon, which in the utmost coast.

37 And Balak faid unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly fend unto thee to call thee? Wherefore cameft thou not unto me? Am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour? 38 And Balaam faid unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to fay any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that fhall I fpeak.

39 And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kirjath-huzoth.

40 And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and fent to Balaam, and to the princes that were wwith him.

41 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that thence he might fee the utmost part of the people.." CHAP. XXIII.

10 Who can count the duft of Jacob, and the number of the fourth part of Ifrael? Let me die the death of the righteous, and fet my laft end be like his.

11 And Balak faid unto Balaam, What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curfe mine enemies, and behold thou haft bleffed them altogether.

12 And he answered and faid, Muft I not take heed to speak that which the LORD hath put in my mouth?

13 And Balak laid unto him, Come, I pray, thee,with me unto another place fromwhence thou mayeft fee them: thou fhalt fee but the utmost part of them, and fhalt not fee them all: and curfe me them from thence.

14 And he brought him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pifgah, and built feven altars, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.

15 And he faid unto-Balak, Stand here by thy burnt-offering, while I meet the LORD yonder.

16 And the LORD met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, Go again unto Balak; and fay thus.

1 And when he came to him, Behold, he flood by his burnt-offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak faid unto him, What hath the LORD ipoken?

18 And he took up his parable, and faid, Rife up Balk, and hear; hearken unto me thou fon of Zippor:

19 God is not a man, that he should lie,neither the fon of man, that he fhould repent= hath he faid, and fhall he not do it or hath he spoken; and fhall he not make it good?

20 Behold, I have received commandment to blefs; and he hath bleffed, and I cannot reverse it.

21 He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath he feen perverfenels in Ifrael:

the LORD to blefs Ifrael, he went not as at other times, to feek for enchantments, but he fet his face toward the wilderness. 2 And Balaam lift up his eyes, and he faw Ifrael abiding in his tents according to their tribes, and the fpirit of God came upon him. 3 And he took up his parable and faid, Balaam the fon of Beor hath faid, and the man whofe eyes are open, hath faid:

4. He hath faid, which heard the words of God, which faw the vifion of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open: How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Ifrael!

6 As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river fide, as the trees of lign aloes which the LORD hath planted, and as cedar-trees befide the waters.

He fhall pour the water out of his buckets, and his feed fhall be in many waters, and his king thall be higher than Agag, and

his kingdom fhall be exalted.

8 God brought him forth out of Egypt, he hath as it were the ftrength of an unicorn: he fhall eat up the nations his enemies, and fhall break their bones, and pierce them hrough with his arrows.

9 He couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion: who fhall (tir him up? Bleffed he that bleffeth thee, and curled he that curfeth thee..

109 And Balak anger was kindled against Balaam, and he fmote his hands together: and Balak faid unto Balaam, I called thee to Curfe mine enemies, and behold, thou haft altogether blefed them the three times.

Therefore now flee thou to thy place: I thought to promote thee unto great ho nour, but lo, the LORD hath kept thee back from honour.

12 And Balaam faid unto, Balak, Spake I not alfo to thy meffengers which thou fenteft unto me, faying,

13 If Balak would give me his houfe full of filver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do either good or bad of mine own mind; but what the LORD faith, that will peak?

14 And now, behold, I go unto my peo, ple come therefore, and I will advertife thee what this people thall do to thy peo ple in the latter days.

154 And he took up his parable, and faid, Balaam the fon of Beor hath faid, and the nran whole eyes are open, hath faid:

16 He hath faid, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High, which faw the vifion of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open: 17 I fhall fee him, but not now: I fhall behold him, but not nigh: there fhall come a Star out of Jacob, and a fceptre fhall rife out of Ifrael, and thall fmite the corners of Mab, and deftroy all the children of Sheth.

8 And Edom fhall be a poffeffion, Seir afo fhall be a poffeflion for his enemies, and Ifrael fhall do valiantly.

19 Out of jacob hall come he that fhall have dominion, and fhall deftroy him that remaiaeth of the city.

20 And when he looked on Amalek, he took up his parable, and faid, Amalek wa

21 And he looked on the Kenites; and took up his parable, and faid, Strong is thy dwelling-place, and thou putteft thy neft in a rock.

22 Nevertheless, the Kenite fhall be wafted, until Asthur fhall carry thee away captive. 23 And he took up his parable, and faid, Alas, whe hall live when God doeth this! 24 And Thips fhall come from the coast of Chittim, and fhall afflict Asfhur, and fhall afflict Eber, and he alfo shall perish for ever.

25 And Balaam rofe up, and went and returned to his place: and Balak alio went his way. CHAP. XXV.

2 And they called the people unto the fa crifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.

3 And Ifrael joyned himfelt unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kin dled against Ifrael.

4 And the LORD faid unto Mofes, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the fun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Ifrael.

s And Mofes faid unto the judges of If rael, Slay ye every one his men, that were joyned unto Baal-peor.

69 And behold, one of the children of Ifrael came, and brought unto his brethren a Midianitifh woman, in the fight of Mofes, and in the fight of all the congregation of the children of Ifrael, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the con gregation.

7 And when Phinehas the fon of Eleazar, the fon of Aaron the priest faw it, he rofe up from amongst the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;

8 And he went after the man of Ifrael into the tent, and thruft both of them through, the man of Ifrael, and the woman through her belly: So the plague was stayed from the children of Ifrael.

9 And thofe that died in the plague were twenty and four thoufand.

109 And the LORD fpake unto Mofes, faying,

11 Phinehas the fon of Eleazar, the fon of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Ifrael (while he was zealous for my fake among them) that I confumed not the children of Ifrael in my jealoufie.

12 Wherefore fay, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace.

13 And he thall have it, and his feed after te him, even the covenant of an everlasting 0 priesthood; because he was zealous for hi God, and made an atonement for the chil dren of Ifrael.

So There are the families of Naphtali according to their families: and they that were numbred of them, were forty and five thoufand and four hundred.

51 There were the numbred of the children of Ifrael, fix hundred thousand and a thoufand feven hundred and thirty

529 And the LORD fpake unto Mofes, faying,

53 Unto thefe the land fhall be divided for an inheritance, according to the number

of names.

54 To many thoufhalt give the more inheritance, and to few thou shalt give the le's inheritance: to every one fhall his inheritance be given according to those that were numbred of him.

55 Notwithstanding the land shall be divided by lot: according to the names of the tribes of their fathers they fhall inherit.

56 According to the lot fhall the poffeflion thereof be divided, between many, and few.

57 And there are they that were num bred of the Levites, after their families: of

Zelophehads daughters. Gershon, the family of the Gerfhonites: of Kohath, the family of the Kohathites: of Merari, the family of the Merarites.

$8 Thele are the families of the Levites: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mufhites, the family of the Korathites: and Kohath begat Amram.

59 And the name of Amrams wife was Jo chebed, the daughter of Levi, whom her mother bare to Levi in Egypt and the bare unto Amram, Aaron and Mofes, and Miriam their fifter.

60 And unto Aaron was born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

62 And thofe that were numbred of them, were twenty and three thoufand, all males from a month old and upward for they were not numbred among the children of firael, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Ifrael.

634 There are they that were numbred by Moles and Eleazar the priest, who numbred the children of Ifrael in the plains of Moab, by Jordan near Jericho.

64 But among these there was not a man of them whom Mofes and Aaron the priest numbred, when they numbred the children of Ifrael in the wilderness of Sinai.

2 And they ftood before Mofes, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes, and all the congregation, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, faying,

3 Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of them that gather ed themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah; but died in his own fin, and had no fons.

4 Why fhould the name of our father be done away from among his family, becaufe he hath no fon? Give unto us there fore a poffeffion among the brethren of our father.

5 And Mofes brought their caufe before the LORD.

6qAnd the LORD fpake unto Mofes,faying,

The daughters of Zelophehad peak right thou shalt furely give them a poffelon of an inheritance among their fathers brethren; and thou halt caufe the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.

8 And thou fhalt speak unto the children of Ifrael, faying, If a man die, and have no fon, then ye thall caufe his inheritance to pass unto his daughter.
