And always night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with ftones. 6 But when he faw Jefus afar off, he ran and worshipped him, And cried with a loud voice, and faid; What have I do with thee, Jefus, thou Son of the moft high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. 8 (For he faid unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean (pirit) 9 And he asked him, What is thy Name? And he answered, faying, My name is legion: for we are many. 10 And he befought him much that he would not fend them away out of the country. II Now there was there nigh unto the mountains, a great herd of fwine feeding. 12 And all the devils befought him, faying,. Send us into the wine, that we may enter into them. 13 And forthwith Jefus gave them leave. And the unclean fpirits went out, and entred into the fwine, and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the fea, (they were about two thouland) and were choaked in the fea. 14And they that fed the fwine fled and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to fee what it was that was done. 15 And they come to Jefus, and fee him that was poffeffed with the devil, and had the legion fitting, and cloathed, and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 16 And they that faw it, told them how it befel to him that was poffeffed with the devil, and alfo concerning the wine. 17 And they began to pray him to depart. out of their coafts. he tel d t The bloody illue healed. Chrift contemned of his countrymen. 18 And when he was come info the fhip, he that had been poffeffed with the devil, prayed him that he might be with him. 19 Howbeit, Jelus fuffered him not, but faith unto him, Go home to thy friends,and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee,and hath had compaffion on thee. 20 And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis, how great things Jetus had done for him: and all men did marvel. 21 And when Jefus was paffed over again by fhip unto the other fide, much people gathered unto him,and he was nigh unto the fea. 22 And behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the fynagogue, Jairus by name,and when he faw him, he fell at his feet, 23 And befought him greatly, faying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death, I pray thee come and lay thy hands on her, that the may be healed, and the fhall live. 24 And Jefus went with him, and much people followed him, and thronged him. 25 And a certain woman which had an iffue of blood twelve years, 26 And had fuffered many things of many phyficians, and had spent all that he had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, 27 When he had heard of Jefus, came in the prefs behind, and touched his garment. 28 For fhe faid, If I may touch but his cloaths, I fhall be whole. 29 And ftraightway the fountain of her blood was dried up and the felt in her body that fhe was healed of that plague. 30 And Jefus immediately knowing in himfelf, that vertue had gone out of him, turned him about in the prels, and faid, Who touched my cloaths? 31 And his difciples faid unto him, Thou feeft the multitude thronging thee,and fayest then, Who touched me? 32 And he looked round about to fee her that had done this thing. 33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her,came and fell down before him,and told him all the truth. 34 And he faid unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague. 35 While he yet fpake, there came from the ruler of the fynagogues houfe, certain which faid, Thy daughter is dead, why troubleft thou the mafter any further? 36 As soon as Jefus heard the word that was fpoken, he faith unto the ruler of the fynagogue, Be not afraid, only believe. 37 And he fuffered no man to follow him, fave Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. 38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the fynagogue, and feeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. 39 And when he was come in, he faith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damfel is not dead, but fleepeth. 40 And they laughed him to fcorn: out when he had put them all out; he taketh the father and the mother of the damfel, and them that were with him, and entreth in where the damfel was lying 41 And he took the damfel by the hand and faid unto her, Talitha cumi, which is, being interpreted, Damfel (I fay unto thee) arile 42 And straightway the damfel arofe, and walked, for fhe was of the age of twelve years and they were astonished with a great astonishment. 43 And he charged them ftraitly, that no man fhould know it: and commanded that fomething fhould be given her to eat. CHAP. VI. Chrift is contemned of his countrymen. 27 John Baptift beheaded. And he went out from thence, and came into his own country, and his difciples follow him. 2 And when the fabbath day was come, he began to teach in the lynagogue and many hearing him were aftonifhed, faying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wildom this which is given unto him, that even fuch mighty works are wrought by his hands? 3 Is not this the carpenter, the fon of Mary, the brother of James and Jofes, and of Juda and Simon? and are not his fifters here with us? And they were offended at him. 4 But Jefus faid unto them,A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own houfe. And he could there do no mighty work, fave that he laid his hands upon a few fick folk, and healed them. 6 And he marvelled becaufe of their unbelief. And he went round about the villa ges, teaching. And he calleth unto him the twelve and began to fend them forth by two and two, and gave them power over unclean fpirits, 8 And commanded them that they fhould take nothing for their journey, fave a staff only: no fcrip,no bread,no money in their purfe 9 But be fhod with fandals: and not put on two coats. 10 And he faid unto them, In what place foever ye enter into an houfe, there abide till ye depart from that place. 11 And whofoever fhall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, fhake off the duft under your feet,for a teftimony against them. Verily I fay unto you, It fhall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gommoran in the day of Judgment, than for that city. 12 And they went out, and preached that men fhould repent. 13 And they caft out many devils, and anointed with oyl many that were fick, and healed them. 14 And king Herod heard of him (for his name was fpread abroad) and he faid, that John the Baptift was rilen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do fhew forth themselves in him. 15 Others faid, That it is Elias. And others faid, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets. 16 But when Herod heard thereof, he faid, It is John whom I beheaded,he is rifen. from the dead. 17 For Herod himself had fent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in pri fon for Herodias fake, his brother Philips wife, for he had married her, Ees 18 For John Baptif beheaded. CHAP. VIE 1The Pharifees blame the difciples for eating with unwashen hands. 14 Meat defileth not. Howbeit, in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 8 For laying afide the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the wafhing of pots and cups: and many other fuch like things ye do. And he faid unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. 10 For Moles faid, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Whofo curfeth father or mother, let him die the death. 11 But ye lay, If a man fhall fay to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to fay, a gift, by whatsoever thou mighteft be profited by me: he fhall be free. 12 And ye fuffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother: 13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered and many fuch like things do ye. 14 And when he had called all the people unto him, He faid unto them, Hearken unto me, every one of you, and understand. 15 There is nothing, from without a man that entring into him, can defile him: but the things which come out of him, thofe are they that defile the man. 16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. And when he was entred into the house from the people, his difciples asked him concerning the parable. 18 And he faith unto them, Are ye fo without understanding alfo? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entreth into the man, it cannot defile him, 19 Because it entreth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? 20 And he faid, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetoufnefs, wickedness, de. ceit, lafcivioufnefs an evil eye, blafphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All thefe eyil things come from within, and defile the man. 249 And from thence he arofe, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entred into an houfe, and would have no man know it; but he could not be hid. 25 For a certain woman whofe young daughter had an unclean fpirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet: vii Chrift feedeth the multitude. 27 But Jefus faid unto her, Let the children firft be filled: for it is not meet to take the childrens bread, and to caft it unto the dogs. 28 And the anfwered and faid unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the childrens crumbs. 29 And he faid unto her, For this faying, go thy way, the devil is gone out of thy daughter. 30 And when she was come to her houfe, the found the devil gone out,and her daugh ter laid upon the bed. 319 And again departing from the coafts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the fea of Galilee, through the midst of the coafts of Decapolis. 32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his fpeech: and they befeech him to put his hand upon him. 33 And he took him afide from the mul-titude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he fpit, and touched his tongue. 34 And looking up to heaven, he fighed,. and faith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. 35 And ftraightway his ears were opened, and the ftring of his tongue was loofed, and he fpake plain. 36 And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them,.. fo much the more a great deal they published it, 37 And were beyond meafure astonished, faying, He hath done all things well: hé maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak... And they had a few fmall files and he bleffed, and conimanded' to fet them alfo before them. 8 So they did eat, and were filled: and. they took up of the broken meat that was left, feven baskets. 9 And they that had eaten were about four thoufand; and he fent them away. 26. IX. 17 And when Jefus knew it, he faith unto them, Why reafon ye, becaule ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither underftand? have ye your heart yet hardned? 18 Having eyes, fee ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? 19 When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They fay unto him, Twelve. 20 And when the feven among four thoufand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. 33-But when he had turned about, and looked on his difciples, he rebuked Peter, faying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou favoureft not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men. 34. And when he had called the people unto him, with his difciples alfo, he faid un, And there was a cloud that overshadow. ed them and a voice came out of the cloud, faying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. 8 And fuddenly when they had looked round about, they faw no man any more, fave Jefus only with themselves. 9 And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they fhould tell no man what things they had feen, till the Son of man were rifen from the dead. 10 And they kept that faying with themfelves, questioning one with another what. the rifing from the dead fhould mean. 11 And they asked him, faying, Why fay the fcribes that Elias muft first come? 12 And he answered,and told them, Elias verily cometh firft, and restoreth all things, and how it is written of the Son of man, that he muft fuffer many things, and be fet. at nought. 13 But I lay unto you, that Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatleever they lifted, as it is written of him. 14 And when he came to his difciples, he faw a great multitude about them, and the fcribes queftioning with them. And ftraightway all the people, when. they beheld him, were greatly amazed, and running to him, faluted him. 16 And he asked the fcribes, What quefti on ye with them? 17 And one of the multitude anfwered and faid, Mafter, I have brought unto thee my for, which hath a dumb fpirit: 18.
