PREFACE.

THE HE Holy Scriptures, containing all the Will of God, and the gracious but indifpenfable terms of Salvation, are our perfect rule of life, and ought doubtlefs to be the early and constant study of every Chriftian. This is the acknowledged doctrine of Proteftants, and it is accordingly their unvaried, practice to put them into the hands of children as foon as they are fent to school; the New Testament being one of the first books in which they learn to read. But their attention is then commonly directed to nothing more than that they do not mistake the words; and when they can pronounce them right, and read a chapter with tolerable fluency, they feem to have done all that is required of them &
