An exhortation to brotherly love.

Chap. v. Anno 7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love Domini is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

90.

b John 3. 16.

< 1 Tim. 6. 16.

+ Gr. love avith us.

8 He that loveth not, knoweth not God; for God is love.

b

9 In this was manifefted the love of God towards us, because that God fent his only-begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and fent his Son to be the propitiation for our fins.

11 Beloved, if God fo loved us, we ought allo to love one another.

12 No man hath feen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.

14 And we have seen and do teftify, that the Father fent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

15 Whofoever fhall confefs that Jefus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.'

16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love: and he that dwelleth in love, dwelleth in God, and God in him.

17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldnefs in the day of judgement: because as he is, so are we in this world.

18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love cafteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth, is not made perfect in love.

19 We love him, because he first loved us. 20 If a man fay, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar. For he that loveth not his brother, whom he hath feen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen ?

4 For whatsoever is born of God, overcometh Anno the world: and this is the victory that overcom- Domini eth the world, even our faith. go.

5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jefus is the Son of God?

6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jefus Chrift; nor by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.

7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghoft: and these three are one.

8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the fpirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

9 If we receive the witnefs of men, the witnefs of God is greater: for this is the witness of God, which he hath teftified of his Son.

10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God, hath made him a liar, because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life: and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son, hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God, hath not life.

13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. 14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that if we ask any thing according || Or, conto his will, he heareth us.

cerning him. 15 And if we know that he hear us, whatfo- Chap. 3. ever we ask, we know that we have the petitions 22. that we desired of him.

16 If any man fee his brother fin a fin, which is not unto death, he shall afk, and he fhall give him life for them that fin not unto death. There is a fin unto death: I do not say that he fhall pray for it. 17 All unrighteousness is fin: and there is a fin not unto death.

18 We know that whofoever is born of God, finneth not; but he that is begotten of God, keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding that we may know him that is true. And we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jefus Chrift. This is the true God, and eternal life.

21 Little children, keep yourfelves from idols. Amen.

The Second Epiftle of JOHN.

He exhorteth a certain honourable matron, with
her children, to perfevere in Chriftian love and
belief, 8 left they lose the reward of their former
profeffion; 10 and to have nothing to do with
thofe feducers that bring not the true doctrine of
Chrift Jefus.

T

HE elder unto the elect lady, and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but alfo all they that have known the truth;

2 For the truth's fake which dwelleth in us, and fhall be with us for ever.

3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace from God the Father, and from the Lord Jefus Chrift the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

4 I rejoiced greatly, that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a' commandment from the Father.

5 And now I befeech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment,

That as ye have heard from the beginning, ye fhould walk in it.

7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confefs not that Jefus Chrift is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver, and an antichrift.

The Third Epiftle of JOH N.

He commendeth Gaius for his piety 5 and hofpitality 7 to true preachers; 9 complaining of the unkind dealing of ambitious Diotrephes on the contrary fide, 11 whofe evil example is not to be followed: 12 and giveth Special teflimony to the good report of Demetrius.

T

HE elder unto the well-beloved Gaius, whom I love | in the truth.

2 Beloved, I with above all things that thou mayeft profper and be in health, even as thy foul profpereth.

3 For I rejoiced greatly when the brethren came and teftified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkeft in the truth.

4 I have no greater joy, than to hear that my children walk in truth.

5 Beloved, thou doeft faithfully whatsoever thou doeft to the brethren, and to ftrangers;

6 Which have borne witnefs of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly fort, thou fhalt do well:

7 Because that for his name's fake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.

8. We therefore ought to receive fuch, that we might be fellow-helpers to the truth.

9 I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the pre-eminence among them, receiveth us not.

10 Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating againft us withmalicious words and not content therewith,. neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and cafteth them out: of the church.

11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil,. but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not feen God,

12 Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record, and ye know that our record is true.

13 I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee:

¶ The General Epistle of J U DE.

He exhorteth them to be conftant in the profeffion of
the faith. 4 Falfe teachers are crept in to feduce
them; for whofe damnable doctrine and manners,
horrible punishment is prepared: 20 whereas the
godly by the affiftance of the Holy Spirit, and prayers
to God, may perfevere and grow in grace, and keep
themfelves, and recover others out of the fnares of
thofe deceivers.

multiplied.

3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common falvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you, that ye fhould earneftly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the faints.

4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lafcivioufnefs, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jefus Chrift.

5 I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord having faved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward deftroyed them that believed

16 These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lufts; and their mouth speaketh great fwelling words, having mens perfons in admiration becaufe of advantage.

17 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apoftles of our Lord Jefus Chrift;
