33¶ And they turned and went up by the 1. & 29. 7. way of Bahan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.

34 And the LORD faid unto Mofes, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and Pfal. 135. 1 thou fhalt do to him as thou didft unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

Balak's firft meffage for Balaam is refufed: 15 His fecond message obtaineth him. 22 An angel would have flain him, if his afs had not faved him. 36 Balak entertaineth him.

ND the children of Ifrael set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab, on this fide Jordan by Jericho.

2 And Baiak the fon of Zippor faw all that Ifrael had done to the Amorites.

3 And Moab was fore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was diftreffed, because of the children of Ifrael.

4 And Moab faid unto the elders of Midian, Now fhall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up the grafs of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.

He fent meffengers therefore unto Balaam the fon of Beor, to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, faying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the Heb. eye.+face of the earth, and they abide over against

me.

6 Come now therefore, I pray thee, curfe me this people, for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I fhall prevail, that we may fmite them, and that I may drive them out of the land: for I wot that he whom thou bleffeft, is bleffed; and he whom thou curfeft, is curfed.

7 And the elders of Moab, and the elders of Midian departed, with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and fpake unto him the words of Ba

lak.

An angel meeteth him in the way.

8 And he faid unto them, Lodge here this Before night, and I will bring you word again as the LORD fhall speak unto me: And the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.

9 And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee?

10 And Balaam faid unto God, Balak the fon of Zippor, king of Moab, hath fent unto me, faying,

11 Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: Come now, curfe me them; peradventure + I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them

out.

12 And God faid unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them, thou shalt not curse the people: for they are bleffed.

13 And Balaam rofe up in the morning, and faid unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land: for the LORD refuseth to give me leave to go with you.

14 And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and faid, Balaam refufeth to come with us.

15¶ And Balak fent yet again princes more, and more honourable than they.

19 Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the LORD will fay unto me more.

20 And God came unto Balaam at night, and faid unto him, If the men come to call thee, rife up, and go with them; but yet the word which I fhall fay unto thee, that shalt thou do.

21 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and faddled his afs, and went with the princes of Moab.

22 And God's anger was kindled, because he went: and the angel of the LORD ftood in the way for an adversary against him: Now he was riding upon his afs, and his two fervants were with him.

23 And the afs faw the angel of the LORD 2 Pet. 2. ftanding in the way, and his fword drawn in his 16. hand: and the afs turned afide out of the way, Jude 11. and went into the field and Balaam smote the afs to turn her into the way.

24 But the angel of the LORD ftood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this fide, and a wall on that fide.

25 And when the afs faw the angel of the LORD, the thruft herself unto the wall, and I 2 crusht

28 And the LORD opened the mouth of the afs, and the faid unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou haft fmitten me these three times ?

29 And Balaam faid unto the ass, Because thou haft mocked me: I would there were a fword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.

30 And the afs faid unto Balaam, Am not I thine afs, upon which thou haft ridden | ever fince I was thine, unto this day? was I ever wont to do fo unto thee? And he faid, Nay.

31 Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he faw the angel of the LORD ftanding in the way, and his fword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.

37 And Balak faid unto Balaam, Did I not earneftly fend unto thee to call thee? Wherefore cameft thou not unto me? Am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour?

38 And Balaam faid unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to fay any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that fhall I fpeak.

3 And Balaam faid unto Balak, Stand by thy burnt-offering, and I will go: peradventure the LORD will come to meet me: and whatsoever he fheweth me, I will tell thee. And he went to an high place.

9 For from the top of the rocks I fee him, and from the hills I behold him: lo, the people fhall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.

10 Who can count the duft of Jacob, and the number of the fourth part of Ifrael? Let + me + Heb. my die the death of the righteous, and let my laft foul, or, my life.

15 And he faid unto Balak, Stand here by thy burnt-offering, while I meet the LORD yonder.

23 Surely there is no enchantment || against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Ifrael: according to this time it shall be faid of Jacob and of Ifrael, What hath God wrought!

24 Behold, the people fhall rise up as a great lion, and lift up himself as a young lion: he fhall not lie down until he eat of the prey, and drink the blood of the flain.

25 ¶ And Balak faid unto Balaam, Neither curfe them at all, nor bless them at all.

26 But Balaam answered and faid unto Balak, Told not I thee, faying, All that the LORD fpeaketh, that I muft do?

27¶ And Balak faid unto Balaam, Come, I pray thee, I will bring thee unto another place; peradventure it will please God, that thou mayest curfe me them from thence.

28 And Balak brought Balaam unto the top of Peor, that looketh toward Jefhimon.

29 And Balaam faid unto Balak, Build me here feven altars, and prepare me here feven bullocks, and feven rams.

30 And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar. CHAP. XXIV.

1 Balaam leaving divinations, prophefieth the happinefs of Ifrael: 0 Balak in anger dimiffeth him. 15 He prophefieth of the Star of Jacob, and the deftruction of fome nations.

12 And Balaam faid unto Balak, Spake I not also to thy meffengers which thou fentest unto me, faying,

13 If Balak would give me his houfe full of filver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do either good or bad of mine own mind; but what the LORD faith, that will I speak?

14 And now behold, I go unto my people: come therefore, and I will advertise thee, what this people thall do to thy people in the latter days.

15 And he took up his parable, and faid, Balaam the son of Beor hath faid, and the man whose eyes are open, hath faid:

16 He hath faid, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High, which faw the vifion of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open :

17 I fhall fee him, but not now: I fhall behold him, but not nigh: there fhall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre fhall rife out of Ifrael, and fhall || finite the corners of Moab, and deftroy all the children of Sheth.

18 And Edom fhall be a poffeffion, Seir alfo fhall be a poffeffion for his enemies, and Ifrael fhall do valiantly.

7 And when Phinehas the fon of Eleazar, the fon of Aaron the priest, faw it, he rofe up from amongst the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;

8 And he went after the man of Ifrael into the tent, and thruft both of them through, the man of Ifrael, and the woman through her belly: So the plague was ftayed from the children of Ifrael.

9 And thofe that died in the plague, were twenty and four thousand.

10 And the LORD fpake unto Mofes, faying,

11 Phinehas the fon of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Ifrael (while he was zealous for my fake among them) that I confumed not the children of Ifrael in my jealousy.

12 Wherefore say, ' Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace.

13 And he fhall have it, and his feed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.

14 Now the name of the Ifraelite that was flain, even that was flain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri the fon of Salu, a prince of a + chief houfe among the Simeonites.

15 And the name of the Midianitish woman that was flain, was Cozbi the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.

13 Of Zerah, the family of the Zarhites: of Shaul, the family of the Shaulites.

14 Thefe are the families of the Simeonites, twenty and two thousand and two hundred.

15¶ The children of Gad after their families: of Zephon, the family of the Zephonites: of Haggi, the family of the Haggites: of Shuni, the family of the Shunites:
