PREFACE.

IT is a highly beneficial, and, it is to be hoped, not a very unusual practice, to read some portion of the Holy Scriptures at the hour of rest. Children, and persons not well acquainted with every part of the Bible, are, however, often at a loss what portion to choose, and it is to meet this need that the following compilation has been made.

The passages selected are short, for the weariness of night does not admit of lengthened attention to reading, but meditation upon a few verses will teach us more than a hasty perusal of many, and it cannot but be profitable to us all to endeavour to fix in our minds some one definite lesson, gathered from God's holy Word, which may remain with us as our last waking thought at night;
