In order to guard my readers, as far as possible, against disappointment, in perusing the following pages, I have thought it well to preface them by stating, in a few words, the general character and design of my little book. And first, as to its character, it is strictly what its title describes it-"Conversations,"-and nothing more; conversations, too, on grave subjects, containing neither interesting story nor amusing incident. I have written, not for the openly profane and irreligious, but rather for all those who, with more or less sincerity, make some profession of Religion, yet without realizing what such a profession requires from them. And my design is to set before such persons, as clearly and strongly as I can, what their Calling as Christians is, and what it requires from them.
