CHAPTER XXVIII.

Esau threateneth Jacob

22 And Jacob went near unto

45 Until thy brother's anger turn away from thee,and he forgetthat which thou hast done to him: then I will send, and fetch thee from thence. Why should I be deprived also of you both in one day?

46 And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life, because of the daughters of Heth: 'if Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these which areof the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me? CHAPTER XXVIII.

18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, poured oil upon the top of it. and set it up or a pillar, fand

CHAPTER XXIX.

Jacob cometh to the well of Haran, L 9 He taketh acquaintance of Rachel 13 Laban entertaineth him. 18 Jacob covenanteth for Rachel. 23 He is deceived with Leah. 28 He marrieth also Rachel,and serveth for her seven years more. 32 Leah beareth Reuben, 33 Simeon, 34 Levi, 35 and Judah.

6 And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well and behold, Rachel his daughter comethwiththesheep. 7 And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them.

8 And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep.

9 And while heyetspake with them, Rachelcame with herfa ther's sheep: for she kept them. 10 And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter

days are fulfilled) that I may go

in unto her.

22 And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and "made a feast.

23 And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him: and he went in unto her. 24 And Laban gave unto his danghter Leah, Zilpah his maid, for an handmaid.

25 And it came to pass, that in themorning,behold,itwas Leah: and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me?

28 And Jacob did so, and fulfil led her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also.

29 And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, Bilhah his handmaid, to be her maid.

30 And he went in also unto Ra chel, and he "loved also Rachel more than Leah,and served with him "yet seven other years. 31 TAnd when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he "opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.

32 And Leah conceived, and bare a sou; and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the LORD hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me. 33 And she conceived again,and bare ason; and said, Because the LORD hath heard that I was hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon.

34 And she conceived again,and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have borne him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.

35 Andsheconceivedagain,and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name "Judah, and fleft bearing.

CHAPTER XXX. Rachel, in grief for her barrenness, giveth Billah her maid unto Jacob, L. 5 She beareth Dan and Naphtali. 9 Leah giveth Zilpah her maid, who beareth Gad and Asher. 14 Reuben findeth mandrakes, with which Leah buyeth her husband of Rachel. 17 Leah beareth Issachar, Zebulun,and Dinah. 22 Rachel beareth Joseph. 25 Jacob desireth to depart. 27 Laban stayeth him on a new covenant. 37 Jacob's policy, whereby he became rich.

35 And he removed thatdaythe he-goats that were ring-streaked and spotted, and all the she-goats that were speckled and spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hands of his sous.

36 And he set three days' journey betwixt himself and Jacob. and Jacob fed the rest of Laban's flocks.

37 And Jacob took him rods of green poplar, and of the ha zel and chesnut-tree; and pilled white streaksinthem,and made the white appear which was in the rods.

38 And he set the rods which he had pilledbeforetheflocksin the gutters in the watering-troughs when the flocks came to drink; that they should conceive when they came to drink.

39 And the flocks conceived hefore the rods, and brought forth cattle ring-streaked, speckled, and spotted.

40 And Jacob did separate the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the ring-streaked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban: and he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them not unto Laban's cattle. 41 And it came to pass whensoever the stronger cattle did conceive, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes ofthe cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods.

42 But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in: so the feebler were Laban's, and the stronger Jacob's.

43 And the man increased exceedingly, and had muchcattle, and maid-servants, and menservants, and camels, and asses.

CHAPTER XXXI.

Jacob upon displeasure departeth secretly, 1. 19 Rachel stealeth her father's images. 22 Laban pursueth after him, 26 and complaineth of the wrong. 34 Rachel's policy to hide the images. 36 Jacob's complaint of Laban. 44 The covenant of Laban and Jacob at Galeed.

20 And Jacob stole away † unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled. 21 So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up, and passed over the river, and "set his face toward the mount Gilead. 22 And it was told Laban on the third day, that Jacob was fled. 23 And he took his brethren him seven days' journey: and with him, and pursued after they overtook him in the mount Gilead.

24 And God came to Laban and said unto him, Take heed the Syrian in a dream by night, that thou speak not to Jacob t either good or bad.

25 Then Laban overtook Ja cob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mount: and La ban with his brethren pitched in the mount of Gilead.

26 And Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done, that thou hast stolen away unawares to 1Sa.30.2. me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword?
