THE PREFATORY NOTE HE lectures here presented were delivered on the "Southworth Foundation," in Andover Theological Seminary in 1898 and 1899. In the selection of the subjects of these biographical sketches the lecturer aimed to present as varied and as typical representatives of the religious thought of Congregational New England as the number of hours placed at his disposal would permit. Other names that will readily occur to the reader might fittingly have been added; but it is believed that each of the men whose portrait has here been attempted deserves the title of a leader of New England.
