his name, and to promote the welfare of his creatures.

And how extensive is the blessing which the God, who calls us to these holy and happy duties, is pleased, in many instances, to bestow on our imperfect endeavours!-The labours of the few first disciples of the Cross, in the mere morning of religion, may at this moment be traced through every corner of the civilized world. The efforts of a solitary monk have changed the whole face of Europe. A few individuals, in our own times, have given birth to schemes which, by uniting all hands and hearts, are covering the world with Bibles and Missionaries. Who, then, that professes to receive the faith of Christ, shall forget to "walk worthy of his high calling?" Who shall venture to ask, "Am I my brother's keeper;"

but will not rather consider himself as the constituted guardian of the best interests and joys of a suffering world?-And let us not despair of success. The root may linger in the soil, and yet eventually spring up. There may be a falling in the leaf, and yet life in the tree. A mighty revolution in opinion or practice may be preparing, of which we are not yet permitted to discover even the first indications. The interests of the church, as well as the happiness of individuals, are in the best and kindest keeping. "Fear not: I am thy shield, and exceeding great reward." "Thou art my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation."

O that every soldier of Christ, clothing himself in "the whole armour of God," would go forth, in faith and courage, to the conquest of the world!

How large is the field which now invites us! How great are the facilities of the war! How numerous the fellowsoldiers who are ready to join us in the ranks! "There is much more land to be possessed in Israel." There are many valleys and mountains, where the name of the Redeemer has not yet been heard; or, if heard, has not been honoured and loved. There

are many countenances from which no hand has endeavoured to wipe the tear, and many hearts of which none have attempted to staunch the wounds. Let the disciples of the Cross go forth upon their enterprise of love and holiness; and let them, in their hours of doubt and disappointment, listen to the language, "Have not I commanded thee? be strong, and of good courage: be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed; for the Lord thy

God is with thee withersoever thou goest."-Thou, blessed Redeemer, hast told us, that if the "salt have lost his savour, it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under foot." Our hearts tremble at the word. But do Thou, O Lord, avert the curse, by saving us from the crime for which it is inflicted. Give us salt in ourselves, and peace one with another.

GOD of the fatherless! thy care
Has made thy children all they are:
Oh, let them catch the gifts of love,
Poured from the treasure-house above,
And strew the sacred wealth around,
Wherever sin has cursed the ground.

Dark were the world shouldst thou remove
The light and glory of Thy love;

And dark, did not thy people's face
Reflect the lustre of Thy grace,

And did they not delight to dress

With flowers the world's sad wilderness.

But, Lord, where'er thy children go,
Sweet Pity walks this vale of woe,
And from her jewelled cup she sheds
The dews of Hope o'er guilty heads,
And gently guides the aching eye
To where the Day-star lights the sky.

Where'er they go, a Power unseen
Sheds o'er the waste a sudden green;
And Peace, no more a stranger there,
Prompts the glad heart to song and prayer;
And o'er the long desponding soul

The waves of trouble cease to roll.

A thousand gifts thy bounty pours;
A thousand blessings crown the hours:
Oh, may each hour, as swift it flies,
Convey our tribute to the skies;
And every gift thy love bestows
Be used to soothe another's woes!
