means he may make use of to turn a poor sinner from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God. And when we mention these cases for the information of our readers, we trust that they are thereby stirred up to very earnest prayer for those about whom we write.

THE OLD SETTLER.

FAR away in the backwoods of Canada lives an old man. Many years ago he left his native land, and went to this new country in the hope that he would be prospered. It may be that at that time, he did not know and love the Lord; but this we do know, that in after years, he would be found looking up to Jesus as his Saviour and his King.

This servant of the Lord was a constant student of the Word of Truth. As he read on, he was led to mark in what a wonderful way God had dealt with His people Israel. Then he saw how God had made them the great means of blessing to all the world:-how all the glad tidings of which we read in the Bible, came to the Gentiles through the Jews.

It is very likely that this good man had often heard the Jews spoken of as cheats, as being unbelievers, and very hard-hearted. And perhaps he had been led by the people of the world

But when he saw

to hate and despise them. what the Word of God said about them he thought but little of what was said by the people of the world. He felt that he and all men were debtors to the Jews, his heart was filled with love towards them, and he longed to do them good. And then he thought-" If we have received of their spiritual things, we ought to be very glad to give to them of our carnal things. If through them we have received the pearl of great price,' if our money can now help to lead these wandering sheep back to the fold of God, how gladly ought we to give it !"

Now, this person had never heard of any Society that was trying to do good to Israel. But he said, "I have a duty to perform, and until I have performed it, my conscience will not be easy in the sight of God." So he made a journey to see a good clergyman whom he knew, and took with him £4, which he wished to be spent in some way that would benefit the Jews. How great was his pleasure when he found that our Society was engaged in sending to them the blessed Gospel! The next year he came again, bringing another £4 to cast into the treasury of the Lord. Freely he had received of the Jews, freely he was ready to give. And this year, which is the third year, he has sent £8, as his thankoffering to God on behalf

of Israel. While too, he is giving as much as he can during his life, he has determined that whenever it is the Lord's will to remove him from this world, a great portion of his small earthly goods shall be left to the London Society for promoting Christianity amongst the Jews.

There is only one point, to which we wish to call the attention of our readers. The good man of whom we have been speaking determined to do something, even before he knew of any means of carrying out the desire of his heart. Now that he knows of the work of our Society, he is even more diligent. of those, who know of the means, who know something of our Society, who know something of our work, but who never do anything on behalf of Israel!

What will God say

THE CEDAR OF LEBANON.

MUCH is said in the Bible about the Cedar of Lebanon. It seems that no wood was so valued as that of the cedar. Large quantities of it were used for the building of the beautiful Temple of Solomon.

The cedar lives to a great age. There are some of them now at Lebanon, which are thought to have been there at the time of the building of the Temple. But most of them are much younger trees, as will be seen by the illustration.

[graphic][subsumed]

The cedar has been brought to England, and

there are many that are very fine in various parts of the country. The snow of Lebanon, which is spoken of in the Word of God, will prove how cold it must be in those mountains, and would be enough to show that the cedar might be expected to flourish in England. We shall hope to propose some questions to our readers about this, and other trees mentioned in the Scriptures.

A RABBI CONFESSING CHRIST.

I WILL narrate to you (writes Mr. Kleinhenn) a striking occurrence, which has greatly assisted in making many Jews in Poland to think upon, and inquire into the truths of Christianity.

one ",

If our young friends would look at the map of Poland, they will find in the Southern part thereof, a place marked Koch. This little town is of some notoriety amongst the Jews, because Rabbi of the most renowned for learning and practical wisdom of all the rabbies of the Chasidim-a bigoted Jewish sect in Poland and Russia-resides there. On the different festivals, &c., Jews of this class go from all parts of the country on a sort of pilgrimage to him; to feed upon his sayings, to hear him repeat prayers, to sit down with him to the festive meal, and to obtain his benediction; and thus thousands would at one time be congregated around him.

Now Rabbi was unwearied in his study of the writings of the rabbies of former days; most careful in observing the ceremonies of his creed, and when engaged in devotional exercises, his misguided fervour and zeal carried him on to such an extent that his voice could be distinctly heard in the second street; in fact, he was no common-place character.
