OF THE

AMERICAN PUBLISHER.

THE author of the following Lectures is rector of the English College at Rome; a situation which he has filled with considerable advantage to that institution. Although but a young man, his name has been for some years before the public, and his profound knowledge of oriental languages and literature, has procured him a place among the most eminent scholars of the age.

The Lectures on the Doctrines of the Catholic Church, were delivered while their distinguished author was on a visit to England, first in the Royal Sardinian Chapel, Lincoln's Inn Fields, during the advent of 1835, and afterwards in St. Mary's, Moorfields, in the lent of 1836. So great was the esteem in which they were held, that their publication was hastened by the attempt of some unprincipled persons to profit by the public feeling, by means of an unauthenticated edition. As argumentative discourses, they are, perhaps, unequalled, certainly not surpass

ed, by any in the English language; while the mass of information which they contain, the chaste style and felicity of illustration for which they are remarkable, combine to give them more attractions than are ordinarily found even in our best controversial writers.
