was conceived, might be interesting to the public as well as those for whom they were originally intended, especially as the Author was not aware that any one else proposed to give this portion of the campaign to the world. His situation afforded him many facilities for observation, and, not being a military man, he will not be suspected of professional partiality in the testimony he has borne.

The sermons have been added, as conveying the reflections suggested by the most memorable incidents of the campaign more conveniently than could always be done in the progress of the narrative, though it is hoped that nothing has been said, under circumstances of so much hurry and excitement, inconsistent with their tenor and object.

It will be soothing to the feelings of those whose friends were numbered among the victims of the Affghanistan war, to know that not only was such honour paid their remains as the circumstances allowed, but that a church is in progress of erection at Colabah, near Bombay, as the most christian and appropriate mode at once of commemorating the dead, and testifying the gratitude of the living.

Bombay, March 29, 1843.
