light, full satiety, everlasting joy, pleasure consummated, and perfect happiness; through the same our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

E 'TERNAL thanks be to Thee, O Thou Creator and Redeemer of men, who, to manifest Thy love to the whole world, hast prepared a great Supper, wherein Thou hast given us food, not the typical lamb of old, but Thy most sacred Body and Blood, rejoicing all the faithful with Thy holy banquet, and replenishing them with the cup of salvation, containing all the delights of Paradise.

Behold, O Lord, I have Thee now who hast all things; I possess Thee to whom all things belong, and who canst do all things; detach my heart from all things but Thee, O my God, and my all, for in all else there is nothing but vanity and vexation of spirit; may my heart be firmly fixed on Thee alone, for Thou art my treasure, Thou art the sovereign truth, perfect happiness, and eternal life.

Let my soul, O Lord, feel the sweetness of Thy presence; grant that it may be satisfied with Thy love, and seek nothing but Thee wherein to rejoice; for Thou art the joy of my heart, my God, and my portion for ever. Thou art the Physician of my soul: Thou healest my sickness with Thy stripes. I am that sick soul whom Thou camest from Heaven to heal: heal, therefore, my soul, for I have sinned against Thee.

Thou art the Good Shepherd, who hast laid down Thy life for Thy sheep. Behold, I am that sheep that was lost, and yet Thou deignest to feed me with Thy Body and Blood. Take me now on Thy shoulders, and carry me in Thy bosom. What canst Thou deny to me, who hast given Thyself to me? Be Thou my Shepherd, and I shall lack nothing in the green pasture wherein Thou feedest me until I am brought to the pastures of eternal life.

O true Light, which enlightenest every man that cometh into the world, enlighten mine eyes, that I sleep not in death! O Fire, continually burning and never failing, behold how lukewarm I am; O do Thou inflame my reins and my heart, that they may be kindled with the fire of Thy love. -- For Thou camest to send fire upon the earth, and what wilt Thou but that it be enkindled?

O King of heaven and earth, mighty in power and rich in compassion, behold me poor and needy; Thou knowest what I most require; Thou alone art able to enrich and assist me: help me, O God, and, out of the treasures of Thy goodness, succour my needy soul. O my Lord and my God, behold, I am Thy servant: give me understanding, and kindle all my affections, by the grace of Thy Spirit, who is comfort, life, and fire of love, that I may know and do Thy will.

Thou art the Lamb of God, the Lamb without

spot, who takest away the sins of the world; take away from me whatever injures me and displeases Thee, and give me what Thou seest to be good in Thine eyes and profitable to me. Thou art my love and all my joy; Thou art my God and my all; Thou art the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup; Thou maintainest my lot. O Jesu, my God and my all, may the sweet and consuming power of Thy love, I beseech Thee, absorb my soul, that I may die to the world for the love of Thee, who didst vouchsafe to die upon the Cross for love of me. Amen.

Preparation for Confirmation.

Read carefully and meditate on the instructions on the Sacrament of Confirmation in the first part of this Book. The following prayers should be used previous to Confirmation. It is most advisable that the candidate should make sacramental confession and receive absolution before the laying on of the Bishop's hands.

Prayer for the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit.

ALMIGHTY and eternal God, who hast vouch

safed to regenerate me in Holy Baptism, by water and the Holy Ghost, who hast granted the remission of all my sins; perfect, I beseech Thee, the work Thou hast begun, and send down upon me the Spirit of Wisdom, that I may despise the corrupt and perishing things of this world, and love

those which are eternal; the Spirit of Understanding, to enlighten me, to give me the knowledge of true religion; the Spirit of Counsel, to make me carefully seek the surest means of pleasing God, and obtaining heaven; the Spirit of Ghostly Strength, that I may courageously overcome the obstacles and temptations which oppose my salvation; the Spirit of Knowledge, to enlighten me in the ways and will of God; the Spirit of true Godliness, to make the service of God sweet and pleasant to me; the Spirit of holy Fear, to fill me with awe, love, and reverence towards Thee, O God, which may make me fear in any way to displease Thee. Seal me, through Thy mercy, with the seal of a disciple of Jesus Christ unto life eternal; and grant that bearing the Cross on my forehead, I may bear it also in my heart, and that confessing Thee boldly before men, I may be found meet to be acknowledged and rewarded among Thy elect people in the terrible day of the general Judgment, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Holy Spirit! Lord of light!

From thy clear celestial height,

Thy pure beaming radiance give.
Come, Thou Father of the poor!
Come, with treasures which endure !
Come, Thou Light of all that live!

Thou, of all consolers best,
Visiting the troubled breast,

Dost refreshing peace bestow :

O

Thou in toil art comfort sweet;
Pleasant coolness in the heat;
Solace in the midst of woe.
Light immortal! light divine
Visit Thou these hearts of Thine,
And our inmost being fill;
If Thou take Thy grace away,
Nothing pure in man will stay;
All his good is turn'd to ill.
Heal our wounds—our strength renew;
On our dryness pour Thy dew;
Wash the stains of guilt away:
Bend the stubborn heart and will;
Melt the frozen, warm the chill;
Guide the steps that go astray.
Thou, on those who evermore
Thee confess and Thee adore,

In thy sevenfold gifts descend:
Give them comfort when they die;
Give them life with Thee on high;

Give them joys which never end.

Prayer for the Twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit.

HOLY Spirit, eternal love of the Father and the Son, vouchsafe to grant me the fruit of Love, that I may love Thee above all things, and my neighbour as myself: the fruit of Foy, that I may be filled with holy consolation: the fruit of Peace, which may produce in me tranquility of soul: the fruit of Long-suffering, that I may not fall into discouragement: the fruit of Gentleness, that I may be kind and compassionate to all men:
