A. Under the New Testament Christ hath instituted in his church only two facraments, baptifm, and the Lord's fupperd. Q. 165. What is baptifm? A. Baptifm is a facrament of the New Testament, wherein Christ hath ordained the washing with water in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost e, to be a sign and feal of ingrafting into himselff, of remission of fins by his bloodg, and regeneration by his Spirit h; of adoption i, and refurrection unto everlasting lifek: and whereby the parties baptized are folemnly admitted into the visible church /, and enter into an open and professed engagement to be wholly and only the Lord's m. Q. 166. Unto whom is baptism to be administred? A. Baptifm is not to be administred to any that are out of the visible church, and so strangers from the covenant of promife, till 164. d Mat. xxviii. 19. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. 1 Cor. xi. 20. When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper. v. 23. For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jefus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread. Mat, xxvi. 26, 27. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ, have put on Christ, g Mark i. 4. John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance, for the remiffion of fins. Rev.i. 5.- Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our fins in his own blood. b Tit. iii. 5. Not by works of righteousness which we have done but according to his mercy he faved us by the wathing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost. Eph. v. 26. That he might fanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word. i Gal, iii. 26. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Chrift Jesus. v. 27. For as many of you as have been baptized into Chrift, have put on Chrift. k1 Cor. xv. 29. Else what shall they do, who are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead? Rom. vi. 5. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death: we shall be also in the likeness of his refurrection. / 1 Cor. xii. 13. Før by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. m Rom. vi. 4. Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into one death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of Y 3 his till they profefs their faith in Christ, and obedience to him n; but infants descending from parents, either both or but one of them, profeffing faith in Christ, and obedience to him, are in that refpect within the covenant, and to be baptized o. Q. 167. How is our baptism to be improved by us? A The needful but much neglected duty of improving our baptifm is to be performed by us all our life long, especially in the the fime of temptation, and when we are present at the administration of it to others p, by serious and thankful confideration of the nature of it, and of the ends for which Christ instituted it, the privileges and benefits conferred and fealed thereby and our folemn vow made therein g; by being humbled for our finful defilement, our falling short of, and walking contrary to, the grace of baptifm and our engagements r; by growing up to affurance of pardon of fin, and of all other blessings fealed to us in that facrament/ by drawing strength from the death and refurrection of Christ, into whom we are baptized, for the mortifying of fin, and quickening of gracet; and by endeavouring to live. by faith v, to have our conversation in holiness and righteoufness w, as those that have therein given up their names to Christ x, and to walk in brotherly love, as being baptized by the fame Spirit into one body y. his Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 166. n Acts viii. 36. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch faid, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? v. 37. And Philip faid, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayeft. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Acts ii. 38. Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jefus Chrift, for the remission of fins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghoft. • Gen. xvii. 7. And I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and thy feed after thee, in their generations for an everlasting covenant; to be a God unto thee, and to thy feed after thee. v. 9. and God faid unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou and thy feed after thee, in their generations. Compared with Gal. iii. 9. So then they who be of faith, are bleffed with faithful Abraham. v. 14. That the blesling of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. And with Col. ii. 11. In whom alfo ye are circumcised with the circumcifion made without hands, in putting off the body of the fins of the flesh, by the circumcifion of Christ: v. 12. Buried with him in baptifm, wherein also you are risen with him thro the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. And with Acts ii. 38. Then Peter faid unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Chrift, for the remiffion of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghoft. v. 39. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. And with Rom. iv. 11. and he received the fign of circumcision, a feal of the righteousness of the faith, which he had, yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcifed: that righteousiness might be imputed unto them also: v. 12. and the father of circumcifion to them who are not of the circumcifion only, but also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised. Cor. vii. 14. For the unbelieving husband is fanctified by the wife, and the un believing wife is sanctified by the hufband: else were your children unclean: but now they are holy. Mat. xxviii. 19. Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into of Jesus Christ, were baptized into his death? v. 4. Is Chrift divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? Rom. vi. 2. God forbid: how shall we that are dead to fin, live any longer therein ? v. 3. Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ, were baptized into his death? Rom. iv. 11. And he received the sign of circumcifion, a feal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them alfo : v. 12. and the father of circumcifion Q. 168. What is the Lord's fupper? A. The Lord's fupper is a facrament of the New Testament z, wherein, by giving and receiving bread and wine according to the appointment of Jesus Christ, his death is shewed forth; and they that worthily communicate, feed upon his body and blood, to their spiritual nourishment and growth in grace a; have to them who are not of the circumcision only, but also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcifed. 1 Pet, ii. 21. The like figure whereunto, even baptifm, doth alfo now fave us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good confcience towards God) by the resurrection of Jefus Chrift. * Rom. vi. 3, 4, 5. (See above in g.) Gal. iii 26. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Chrift Jefus. v. 27. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ, have put on Chrift. w Rom. vi. 22. But now being made free from fin, and become fervants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlast ing life. x Ats ii. 38. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and kave been ail made to drink into one Spirit. v. 25. That there should be no fchifm in the body; but that the members should have the fame care one of another. v. 26. and whether one member fuffer, all the members suffer with it : or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it. v. 27. Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. 168. z Luke xxii. 20. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the New Testament in my blood, which is shed for you. a Mat, xxvi. 26. And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and bleffed it, and brake it, and gave it. to the disciples, and faid, Take, eat; this is my body. v. 27. and he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it: v. 28. For this is my blood of the New Testament which is shed for many for the remision of sins. 1 Cor. xi. 23. For I have received of the Lord, that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jefus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread: V. 24. and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat; this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. v. 25. after the fame manner alfo he have their union and communion with him confirmed b; testify and renew their thankfulness and engagement to God d, and their mutual love and fellowship each with other, as members of the fame mystical body e. Q. 169. How hath Christ appointed bread and wine to be given and received in the facrament of the Lord's supper? A. Christ hath appointed the ministers of his word, in the administration of this facrament of the Lord's supper, to fet apart the bread and wine from common use by the word of institution, thanksgiving and prayer; to take and break the bread and to give both the bread and the wine to the communicants: who are by the fame appointment to takeand eat the bread, and to drink the wine; in thankful remembrance that the body of Christ was broken and given, and his blood shed for them f. Q. 170. How do they that worthily communicate in the Lord's fupper feed upon the body and blood of Christ therein? A. As the body and blood of Christ are not corporally or carnally present in, with, or under the bread and wine in the Lord's he took the cup, when he had fupped, faying, This cup is the new Testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. v. 26. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come. b1 Cor. x. 16. The cup of bleffing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? the bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? c 1 Cor. xi. 24. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the • communion of the blood of Christ? the bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? v. 21. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils. e 1 Cor. x. 17.
