Iren. expreffeth it, . 4. c. 34) confifts ix duo wçayπραγ μάτων, ἐπιγείς τε καὶ ἐρανία, of two Things, the earthly and the heavenly; and as all the gana heavenly Things, or imagára fuper celeftial, are in the Language of the N. Teft. diva eternal, fo the Eucharift in particular may very fitly be fo called because it is φάρμακον ἀθανασίας, ἀντίδοος τὸ μὴ ἀποθανεῖν ἀλλὰ Τὴν ἐν Ἰησε Χρισῷ διὰ πανιός, the Medicine of Immortality, our Antidote that we bould not die, but live for ever in Chrift Jefus. This is undoubtedly an Interpolation, and does not feem to make good Senfe, that the προκείμενα δῶρα, the Gifts fet before God, as made the Body and Blood of Chrift by the Defcent of the holy Spirit upon them, fhould be τοῖς ἐξ αὐτῶν μεταλαμβάνεσιν, τo all who partake of them, for the Confirmation of the holy Catholick Church, c.

a I would incline to think this fhould be rather in the fingular Number, καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν ἄρτον τῦτον καὶ ἐπὶ τὸ ποτήριον πάτο, and upon this Bread and this Cup, as it is immediately after. See 1 Cor. x. 17. S. Ignat. Ep. ad Eph. c. xx. ἵνα ἄρτον κλῶντες, breaking one Bread. And Ep. ad. Philad. c. 4. ἓν ποτήριον εἰς ἕνωσιν τὸ αἷμαῖος αὐτο, one Cup in the Unity of his Blood. * I have inclos d » πνεύματα, and Spirit, in Hooks, because
