gave the Precepts of Salvation, took us off from the Error of Idolatry, and brought us to the Knowledge of Thee the true God and Father, purchafing us to himself a peculiar People, a royal Priesthood, a holy Nation, and purifying us with Water, and fanctifying us by the Holy Ghost: He gave himself a Ransom to Death, by which we were holden, being fold under Sin; and defcending through the Cross into Hades, that he might fill all things with himfelf, he loofed the Pains of Death; and rifing again the third Day, and opening a Way in the Flesh to the Refurrection of the Dead, for as much as it was not poffible that the Author of Life fhould be holden of Corruption, he became the First-fruits of them that flept, the First-born from the Dead, that he might be the first of all in all things, and ascending into Heaven, he fat down at the right Hand of thy Majefty on high; who fhall also come again to render to every one according to his Works. But he has left us thefe Memorials of his falutary Paffion-for when he was to go out to his voluntary-and life-giving Death, in the fame Night in which he offered up himfelf for the Life of the World,

* So it is allo in Lit. Clem. Mar. and Bafil, not to mention many other latter Liturgies. And the Testimonies for the Mixture of Wine and Water in the Euchariftick Cup are so many and fo early, that there can be no doubt of it's being an Apoftolical Tradition,

εἰσ, and confequently derived from the Practice of

Chrift himfelf.

+ I have omitted Οσάκις γὰρ, for as oft, &c. becaufe in 1 Cor. xi. from whence they are taken, they

feem not to be the Words of our Saviour, but the Inference of St. Paul from his Command τότο ποιεῖτε, do this, &c. howfoever they have come to be inferted in fo many Liturgies. And though they are not fo exceptionable in this Lit. where they are in the third Perfon, as in Lit. Syr. Clem. &c. where they are put in the firft, yet ftill the Connexion is at least more natural without them, where after repeating the Command of our Lord τέτο ποιεῖτε εἰς τὴν ἐμὴν ἀνάμνησιν, do this in Remembrance of me, the Prieft immediately fubjoins μεμνημένοι εν, wherefore in Remembrance, &c.
