harmonises with the school of Bishop Bull. The doctrines of the Gospel are lost in a mist. Such learned writers seem often to content themselves with a minimum of evangelical truth. We would not deny their value in guarding against abuses of the doctrines of grace, or in enlarging the mind on some particular topics discussed by them; but a plain Christian, who has thoroughly studied the Epistles of the New Testament, will be surprised at the coldness and contractedness of this school, and puzzled and confounded by human distinctions and reasonings.

To enter fully into the subjects discussed in this work would require another volume. His outline of the Christian system is very vague and unsatisfactory, not to say really unscriptural in several of its proportions. Take the following proposition.

"3. That to be justified, or saved, or sanctified, is to be freed as much from the power of sin, as from its penalty; as much from that law of sin, which, in the words of Scripture, is in our members, or earthly passions, as from that awful judgment which God inflicts on the wicked; and that these two things, if they be two things rather than one, are commensurate."

The Scriptures distinguish between justification and sanctification, which Mr. Penrose would confound. We may most advantageously distinguish without in the least degree divorcing one doctrine from another. He has another proposition as follows.

"12. The Scripture does not authorize us to claim any benefit from Christ's merits, for those who do not believe in him, as, for instance, for those who have led good lives by the light of nature; or, to affirm that he propitiates God, (who indeed, in the sending of him has been justly said to have shown himself to be already propitious,) in any other sense than the obvious sense of reforming, improving, and sanctifying the weak and sinful creature whom God sent him to save.'

We do not understand the consistency of this proposition with our 18th Article, or with the scriptural doctrine that Christ's death is a propitiation for the sins of the whole world.

Those who merely have a theoretical view of the doctrines of grace, without any real personal application to themselves, or any experience of their power, may see in such a writer what a stumbling-block they present to those doctrines being valued and received by persons who can discern the insufficiency and worthlessness of such a bare head-knowledge of truth. But how those who are earnestly seeking salvation can find their way to Christ through these mists and thick fogs of mere human notions we know not. Sure we are that the pure light of divine truth in the Word, will be a far clearer and more certain guide, and that the only effective means of producing really good works, is a full exhibition of the free and sovereign grace of the Gospel, brought home to the heart by the power of the Holy Spirit.

LIFE OF EDWARD THE VIth, compiled chiefly from his own manuscripts, and from other authentic sources. By the Rev. R. W. DIBDIN, M.A. London: Dalton. 18mo.

THE JESUITS, THEIR PRINCIPLES AND ACTS. By EDWARD DALTON. London: Dalton. 18mo.

THE DIVINE WARNING OF THE CHURCH AT THIS TIME. By the Rev. E. BICKERSTETH. Eighth Thousand. London: Dalton. 18mo.

THE Protestant Association is sending forth a series of publications, of which the above are specimens, in form adapted for wide circulation, and in matter well suited to the wants of the times.

The Life of Edward the VIth is prepared from the original documents, and justifies the high esteem and love with which British Protestants have ever regarded that Josiah of the British Church, against all the modern attempts to disparage his character. Mr. Dibdin lets the Letters and Journal of Edward speak for themselves, and we may see how valuable the godly simplicity and sincerity of that truly estimable and pious monarch really were, in the many difficulties of establishing the Reformation.

The History of the Jesuits takes distinct views of their principles, and their acts. It is a most seasonable and useful work. Prodigious as was the learning of some among the Jesuits, ardent as was their zeal, and numerous as were their personal sacrifices, we cannot but view them as the great agents of Satan to obstruct and overthrow the true Church of Christ, and to rebuild and re-establish the mystery of iniquity, and the mother of abominations. Their evil principles and practices are here distinctly traced, and followed to their necessary results.

Mr. Bickersteth's Divine Warning was noticed by us before. This is a fresh edition, being the eighth thousand, with some additions.
