WE have here specimens of two different series of publications, intended as antidotes to Tractarian poison. The first emanates, we understand, from a recent association of clergymen, who purpose bringing out defences of those peculiar doctrines of the Church of England, which the Tracts for the Times were intended to overthrow. The other two are parts of a series lately. commenced by the Reformation Society, upon a cheaper and more popular plan. Our readers will find it worth their while to go to the very small expense which will be required, to put themselves in possession of both these series. The argument maintained in No. I. of " Our Reformed Church " is a very important branch of a great question, upon which much, in these days, depends. In the tolerably notorious "unprotestantizing" article, in No. 59 of the British Critic, there occurs the following passage: MAY, 1843. 2 T "We trust, of course, that active and visible union with the See of Rome is not of the essence of a Church; at the same time we are deeply conscious that in lacking it, far from asserting a right, we forego a great privilege. Rome has imperishable claims upon our gratitude; and, were it so ordered, upon our deference. She is our elder sister in the faith: nay, she is our mother, to whom, by the grace of God, we owe it that we are what we are; for her sins and for our own we are estranged from her in presence, not in heart; may we never be provoked to forget her, or cease to love her, even though she frown upon us; and to desire, if it were possible, to be at one with her." 1 These sentiments were deliberately written and published by a clergyman of the Church of England:-by one who had again and again subscribed and declared his belief in the thirty-nine Articles of that Church, as "agreeable to the word of God;" knowing, too, that the XXVIIIth Article charges Rome with many superstitions; "-the XIVth, with "arrogancy and IMPIETY; " and the XXXIst, with "BLASPHEMY." “ These sentiments were also deliberately written and published by one who had subscribed and declared that the Book of Common Prayer "containeth nothing contrary to God's word,”-knowing, too, that that book of Common Prayer charges Rome with "IDOLATRY to be abhorred of all faithful Christians." 2 These sentiments were further deliberately written and published by one who had subscribed and declared his belief, that the Book of Homilies "containeth godly and wholesome doctrine," fit to be "read in churches by the Ministers, that they may be understanded of the people; " knowing, too, that the said Book of Homilies declares the Church of Rome to be "the MOTHER OF WHOREDOM, set forth by St. John in his Revelation;" and the bishop of Rome to be "ANTICHRIST." 3 Such is the honesty and fidelity inculcated by those "pious and able men "" who have translated the Jesuit Santa Clara into the Tract for the Times, No. XC. We cannot repeat to our readers, many of whom we trust will study for themselves these publications, the arguments they contain; neither shall we waste time on minor criticisms of works with whose general reasonings we entirely concur. We prefer to take up one of the arguments therein contained; and to endeavour to carry it somewhat further.
