MINUTES OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

MAY 21, 1812.

THE General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, met, agreeably to appointment, in the First Presbyterian Church in the city of Philadelphia, at 11 o'clock, A. M. and was opened by the Rev. Andrew Flinn, D. D. (the Moderator of the last Assembly being absent) with a sermon from I. Corinthians, i. 21. "For after that, in the wisdom of God, the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God, by the foolishness of preaching, to save them that believe."

After prayer, the Commissions were read; and it appeared that the following ministers and elders were duly appointed, and attended as Commissioners to this Assembly, viz.

Aaron Dutton, produced a certificate of their appointment as delegates to represent that body in this Assembly; and accordingly took their seats as members.

OF THE GENERAL ASSOCIATION OF NEWHAMPSHIRE. The Rev. Stephen Chapin produced a certificate of his appointment as a delegate to represent that body in this Assembly; and took his seat as a member.

OF THE GENERAL ASSOCIATION OF MASSACHUSETTS

PROPER.

The Rev. John Codman produced a certificate of his appointment to represent that body in this assembly; and took his seat as a member.

The Assembly proceeded to elect a Moderator and temporary Clerk: and the Rev. Andrew Flinn, D. D. was chosen Moderator, and the Rev. Robert Cathcart, Temporary Clerk.

The Delegates appointed by the last Assembly to attend the General Association of Connecticut, reported that they all attended, and that the Association had appointed a Committee to devise means for preventing the intemperate use of spirituous liquors.

The delegates appointed by the last Assembly to attend the meeting of the General Association of New Hampshire, reported that they attended, and that the Association appointed a committee to correspond and cooperate with the Committee appointed by the last Assembly to devise measures against the excessive and intemperate use of spirituous liquors; and that the following persons; viz. The Rev. Messrs. Asa M'Farland, William F. Rowland, John H. Church, Eli Smith, Ethan Smith, Aaron Hall, Abijah Wines, and Drury Fairbank, were appointed a Committee to certify the regular standing of ministers and candidates, travelling from New Hampshire.

The delegate appointed by the last Assembly to attend the General Convention of Vermont, reported that he had attended, and that the Convention had appointed a Committee to cooperate with the Committee appointed by the last Assembly, and with Committees appointed by other public religious bodies, to devise measures to prevent the mischiefs arising from the intemperate use of spirituous liquors; and that the Rev. Messrs. Gershom, C. Lyman, Bancroft Fowler, Leonard Worcester, Martin Tullar, John Griswold, Jedidiah Bushnell, Publius V. Booge, and John Willard, were appointed a Committee of credentials.

The delegates appointed by the last Assembly, to attend the General Association of Massachusetts proper, reported that they attended, and that the Association had appointed a Committee to cooperate with that of the Assembly, in devising measures for arresting the progress of the prevailing intemperate use of spirituous liquors.

The Rev. John P. Campbell, the Rev. Amzi Armstrong, and the Rev. George C. Potts, were duly elected delegates to attend the the General Association of Connecticut to meet in the town of Sharon, Litchfield county, on the third Tuesday of June next, at 11 o'clock, A. M.
