SECT. XXX. JESUS GOES THE SECOND TIME UP TO JERUSALEM FOR THE PASSOVER. HE HEALS THE CRIPPLE AT THE POOL OF BETHSAIDA. A.D. 28. SECOND PASSOVER.

After these things was a festival day of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Jerusalem.

Now there is at Jerusalem a pool called Probatica, which in Hebrew is named Bethsaida, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of sick, of blind, of lame, of withered, waiting for the moving of the water. And an angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pool; and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pool after the movement of the water was made whole of whatsoever infirmity he lay under.

And there was a certain man lying there that had been eight-and-thirty years under his infirmity; and when Jesus saw him and knew that he had been now a long time ill, he saith to him, Wilt thou be made whole? The sick man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool; for whilst I am coming, another goeth down before me. Jesus saith to him, Arise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole; and he took up his bed and walked.

And it was the sabbath that day. The Jews therefore said to him that was healed, It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed. He answered them, He that made me whole, he said to me, Take up thy bed, and walk.

They asked him therefore, Who is that man who said to thee, Take up thy bed and walk? But he that was healed knew not who it was; for Jesus had gone aside from the multitude who were in that place.

Afterwards, Jesus findeth him in the temple, and saith to him, Behold thou art made whole; sin no

more, lest some worse thing happen to thee. The man went his way, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him whole. Therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath. But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh until now; and I work. Hereupon therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he did not only break the sabbath, but also said God was his Father, making himself equal to God.

Then Jesus answered and said to them, Amen, anen I say unto you, the Son cannot do anything of hinself, but what he seeth the Father doing; for what things soever he doth, these the Son also doth in like manner. For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth him all things which himself doth; and greater works than these will he show him, that ye may wonder. For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and giveth life, so the Son also giveth life to whom he vill. For neither doth the Father judge any man, but hath given all judgment to the Son; that all men may honour the Son as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Fatier, who hath sent him. Amen, amen I say unto you, that he who heareth my word, and believeth him tlat sent me, hath life everlasting; and cometh not ito judgment, but is passed from death to life.

Amen, amen I say unto you, that the hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live. For as the Jather hath life in himself, so he hath given to the Son also to have life in himself. And he hath given him power to execute judgment, because he is the Son f Man. Wonder not at this; for the hour cometh vherein all that are in the graves shall hear the voice f the Son of God. And they that have done good mall come forth unto the resurrection of life; but hey that have done evil unto the resurrection of concemnation.

Of myself I can do nothing. As I hear, so I judge and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will, but the will of him that sent me. bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. Ye sent to John, and he gave testimony to the truth. But I receive not testimony from man; bit I say these things, that ye may be saved. He was a burning and a shining light; and ye were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. But I have a greater testimony than that of John; for the works which the Father hath given me to perform, tie works themselves which I do give testimony of ne that the Father hath sent me. And the Father himself who hath sent me hath given testimony of ne: neither have ye heard his voice at any time, nor sen his shape. And ye have not his word abiding in you; for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. Ye search the scriptures, for in them ye think ye lave life everlasting; and the same are they that ive testimony of me. And ye will not come to me hat ye may have life. I receive not glory from nen. But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. I am come in the name of my Father, and y receive me not; if another shall come in his ow name, him ye will receive How can ye believe wh receive glory one from another, and the glory whic is from God alone ye do not seek? Think not tha I will accuse you to the Father. There is one tha accuseth you, Moses, in whom ye trust. For if y did believe Moses, ye would believe me also; for h wrote of me. But if ye do not believe his writings how will ye believe my words?

SECT. XXXI. THE DISCIPLES PLUCK EARS OF CORN ON THE SABBATH-DAY. OUR LORD'S ANSWER TO THE PHARISEES.

And it came to pass, on the second-first sabbath,* that, as Jesus went through the corn-fields, his disciples, being hungry, began to pluck the ears, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.

And some of the Pharisees said to them, Why do ye that which is not lawful on the sabbath-days? And Jesus, answering them, said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was hungry, and they that were with him: how he went into the house of God, under Abiathar the highpriest, and did eat the loaves of proposition, which it was not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave to them who were with him?† Or have ye not read in the law, that on the sabbath-days the priests in the temple break the sabbath, and are without blame? But I tell you, that there is here one greater than the temple. And if ye knew what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice (1 Kings xv. 22; Osee vi. 6), ye would never have condemned the innocent. And he said to them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is Lord also of the sabbath.

SECT. XXXII. JESUS WORKS ANOTHER MIRACLE ON THE SABBATH. THE PHARISEES AND HERODIANS CONSPIRE AGAINST HIM.

Galilee.

And it came to pass also on another sabbath that he entered into the synagogue, and taught. And there was a man whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and Pharisees watched

if he would heal on the sabbath, that they might find an accusation against him. But he knew their thoughts; and said to the man who had the withered hand, Arise, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. Then Jesus said to them, I

ask you if it be lawful on the sabbath-days to do good, or to do evil; to save life, or to destroy? But they held their peace. And he said to them, What man shall there be among you that hath one sheep; and if the same fall into a pit on the sabbath-day, will he not take hold of it and lift it out? How much better is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do a good deed on the sabbath-days. And looking round about on them with anger, being grieved for the blindness of their hearts, he said to the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he stretched it forth; and his hand was restored unto him.

And the Pharisees went out immediately, and made a consultation with the Herodians* against him, how they might destroy him.

SECT. XXXIII. JESUS GOES TO THE SEA-SIDE AND WORKS MANY MIRACLES. HE CHOOSES HIS TWELVE APOSTLES. A.D. 28.

And Jesus retired with his disciples to the sea; and a great multitude followed him from Galilee and Judea, and from Jerusalem, and from Idumea, and from beyond the Jordan. And they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, hearing the things which he did, came to him.

And he spake to his disciples that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude, lest they should throng him. For he healed many; so that as many as had diseases pressed upon him to
