The word parable means a comparison. Our Lord's parables are narratives setting forth a likeness between the moral and spiritual truths of the Gospel, and what we witness in the world of nature or the life of men. Our Lord taught in, parables-(1) to hide the mysteries of his kingdom from the proud, the careless, and the insincere ; (2) to make them more intelligible and impressive to the humble, the earnest, and the candid.
