his scourged back, his head crowned with thorns, his hands and feet nailed to the cursed tree, his side pierced; and hear him mourn an absent God, "My God! my God! why hast thou forsaken me?” Did his disciples stand by him? No did his virgin Mother wipe away the dew of agony from his brow? No, there is none to comfort him, save one lone angel in the garden; his own disciples forsook him and fled, and they who passed by reviled him, wagging their heads-O! was there ever grief like his?

Do you ask whence all this difference?

It was in order to disarm death of its sting to the believer, to spoil the grave of its victory. Yes, it was in order that the Valley of the shadow of Death, might be full of peace and light to our beloved child, that the chamber where her frail humanity expired, might be none other than the gate of Heaven.

Surely then, even the young need not shrink from the scene, nor turn away from the death-bed of our now sainted daughter. Oh! rather stay, and listen to her expiring voice, saying, boundless! boundless mercy!"

We were all standing round her bed, anxiously watching to catch every word that might fall from her lips. Her Papa perceiving that one of the candles was so placed, that the light shone on her dying countenance, ordered an attendant in the room to remove it. She was reminded of the language of the Psalm xxiii. 41, she repeated the words, "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."

She frequently asked what o'Clock it

was, but with no impatience as if she thought the time long; the symptoms of approaching dissolution were now evidently increasing, her pulse had intermitted for some time, and her extremities had become cold. She was aware of these circumstances, and had calculated on the result. She was perfectly sensible and collected, a holy serenity pervaded her mind, and influenced all she said. Her Papa spoke

to her of the promises of God, as that rod and staff which were to support her in the valley, she said with a very feeble voice, "what are the promises of God?" she was told they were, Yea and amen in Christ
