PREFACE.

We have now the gratification of submitting at the bar of the Public, the Second Volume of the British Pulpit, comprising Sixty Sermons, delivered by no less than forty-six Ministers of different denominations, exhibiting the choicest fruits of their studies, and of their joint labours for the instruction of the ignorant, for awakening the careless and unconcerned to what regards their best interests, and for the edification and comfort of the pious, in the faith and hope of the Gospel.

The reception which our former Volume has obtained, demands from us a grateful acknowledgment, which we now sincerely tender to the religious Public, hoping they will find in the care, expense, and labour bestowed on the present, sufficient evidence to convince them, that we are not disposed to abuse their confidence, or trifle with the important trust we have undertaken.

When we state that our Reporters have been sent to Bristol, Bath, Liverpool, Manchester, and even as far as Edinburgh, to attend on special occasions, and procure accurate and authentic reports of valuable Sermons by eminent Ministers, they must be aware that no inconsiderable expense has been incurred to meet the wishes of our friends, and maintain the respectability of our publication. Some of these Discourses will be found in the present Volume, and others which have been taken, shall be given as opportunity offers.

At the commencement of our undertaking, we presumed to offer a few remarks on the importance of the pulpit as a medium of religious instruction, and, we may add, a mighty engine of good or evil, according to the use that is made of it. We feel disposed on the present occasion to
