VER. 17-20. Christ came not to destroy, but to fulfil the Law.

What law?

A. The law delivered by God to Moses. What prophets?

A. The writings of the old prophets.

What do the law and the prophets compose?

A. Great part of the Old Testament.

What shall be done to him, who breaks one of the least commandments,

A. They attended principally to outward forms and ceremonies.

How must our righteousness exceed theirs?

A. By attending to duties, as well as forms and ceremonies; to inward purity, as well as outward conduct. What will happen to us, if our righteousness does not exceed theirs?

Who were the Scribes?

shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: But whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven,

A. Jews, whose office it was to write copies of the law, and to read and explain it to the people.

Who were the Pharisees? A. A proud sect of Jews, who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others.

What is meant by a precept?

A. A rule or direction. What was said by them of old time?

What was threatened to him who killed?

Who, does Christ say, shall be in danger of the judgment?

A. A vain and worthless fellow.

What is meant by being in danger of the council?

A. Being in danger of a sentence to severe punishment from that assembly. What is meant by "council?"

A. The great assembly of the Jewish elders.

What is threatened to any one who shall say, "Thou fool?"

What is here meant by a "fool?"

VER. 21-26.

Christ extendeth the precepts against murder.

Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment. But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council; but whosoever shall say,

if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee deliver thee to the officer, to the judge, and the judge and thou be cast into prison, Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

What is meant by thy right eye offending thee? A. Causing me to offend. If your right hand offend you, what are you commanded to do? Why?

Did Christ really mean that we should pluck out a right eye, or cut off a right hand?

A. No.

What are we to learn then from this precept, respecting the right eye or right hand?

A. That we should part with any thing that is most dear to us, if it is likely to lead us into sin.

But what does Christ say a man does, if he puts away his wife saving for the cause of fornication?

What is the meaning of "forswear?"

A. To swear falsely But what does Christ say concerning swearing?
