The peculiarities of composition in this work are obvious. They arise from the specific design of the author, viz. to furnish Missionaries with a work for translation into the Vernacular languages of India. In carrying out this plan he has studiously endeavoured to present his subjectmatter in the several modes of native thought and expression. He has not written for European mind, nor Indian mind Europeanized by education, but for purely native mind.

Although availing himself of the English language, he has presented Indian imagery and illustrations. He trusts that he has thereby rendered the task of translation easy. Indeed the translator will find whole pages capable of transcription, thought for thought and illustration for illustration. He cannot but fear lest his design appear presumptuous. In seeking so much, he may fail. of securing that usefulness which might have resulted from a more limited plan. He leaves this however in the hands of the Lord Jesus Christ, whose glory he has sought to illustrate.
