CHA P. XVIII.

Jethro bringeth to Mofes his Wife and two Sons: 7 Mofes entertaineth him, 13 and accepteth his Counsel.

CHA P. XIX.

The People come to Sinai. 3 GOD's Meffage to the People out of the Mount: 8 Their Anfwer returned. 16 The fearful Prefence of GOD upon the Mount.

Ver. 1 N the third Month, when the Children of Ifracl were gone forth out of the Land of Egypt, the fame Day came they into the Wilderness of Sinai.

2 For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the Defart of Sinai, and had pitched in the Wilderness, and there Ifrael camped before the Mount.

3 And Mofes went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the Mountain, faying, Thus fhalt thou fay unto the Houfe of Jacob, and tell the Children of Ifrael;

4 Ye have feen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I BARE you on EAGLE'S Wings, and brought you unto myfelf..

5 i Now therefore, if ye will obey my Voice indeed, and keep my COVENANT, then ye fhall be a PECULIAR TREASURE unto me above all People for all the Earth

2 When thou passest through the WATERS, I WILL be WITH THEE; and is mine. through the Rivers they fhall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the FIRE, thou shalt not be burnt; neither fhall the Flame kindle upon thee.

3 For I am the LORD thy GOD. the HOLY ONE of Ifrael, thy SAVIOUR. a. xli 8 But thou Ifrael art my Servant, JACOB whom I have chofen, the Seed of ABRAHAM my Friend.

9 Thon whom I have TAKEN from the Ends of the Earth, and called thee from the chief Ends thereor, and faid unto thee, Thou art my SERVANT, I have CHOSEN thee. and not caft thee away

1 John in. Behold what manner of Love the FATHER hath BESTOWED upon us, that we should be CALLED the Sons of God; therefore the World knoweth us not, because it KNEW him not.

2 Now are we the Sons of GOD, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be but we know, that when he fhall APPEAR, we fhall be LIKE him, for we fhall SEE him as he is.

3 And every Man that hath this HOPE in him, PURIFIETH himself, even

as he is pure

Cat. i. 12 GIVING THANKS unto the FATHER, which hath made us MEET to be PARTAKERS of the INHERITANCE of the SAINTS in LIGHT:

13 Who hath DELIVERED US from the POWER of DARKNESS, and hath tranflated us into the KINGDOM of his DEAR SON.

14 In whom we have REDEMPTION through his BLOOD, even the FORGIVENESS of SINS.

6 And ye fhall be unto me a Kingdom of PRIESTS, and an HOLY NATION. Thefe are the Words which thou fhalt fpeak unto the Children of Ifrael.

7 And MOSES came and called for the Elders of the People, and laid before their Faces all thefe Words which the LORD commanded him.

8 And all the People anfwered together, and faid, All that the LORD hath spoken, we will do. And Mofes returned the Words of the People unto the LORD.

I Pet ii. 9 Ye are a CHOSEN GENERATION, a ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, an HOLY NATION, a PECULIAR PEOPLE,

that ye fhould fhew forth the PRAISES of him who hath called you out of DARKNESS into his marvellous LIGHT

Io Which in time paft were not a People, but are now the PEOPLE of GoD: which had not obtained MERcx, but now have obtained Mercy.

11 Dearly beloved, I befeech you as Strangers and PILGRIMS, abftain from FLESHLY LUSTS, which wAR against the SouL;

Rev. i. 4 GRACE he unto you, and PEACE from him which is, and which was, and which IS TO COME;

s And from JESUS CHRIST, who is the FAITHFUL WITNESS, and the FIRSTBEGOTTEN of the DEAD, and the PRINCE of the KINGS of the EARTH: unto him that LOVED us, and WASHED US from our SINS in his owN BLOOD,

6 And hath made us KINGS and PRIESTS unto GoD and his FATHER; to him be GLORY and DOMINION for

ever and ever.

9 And the LORD faid unto MOSES, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick Cloud, that the People may hear when I fpeak with thee, and BELIEVE thee for ever. told the Words of the People unto the LORD.

And MOSES

10 And the LORD faid unto MOSES, Go unto the People, and SANCTIFY them To-day and To-morrow, and let them wash their Cloaths,

11 And be ready against the third Day: for the third Day the LORD will come down in the Sight of all the People upon Mount Sinai.

12 And thou fhalt fet Bounds unto the People round about, faying, Take heed to yourfelves, that ye go not up into the Mount, or touch the Border of it: whofoever TOUCHETH the Mount, fhall be furely put to DEATH.

13 There shall not an Hand touch it, but he fhall furely be ftoned or fhot through; whether it be Beast or Man, it fhall not LIVE: when the TRUMPET foundeth long, they fhall come up to the Mount.

14 And MOSES went down from the Mount unto the People, and SANCTIFIED the People, and they wafhed their Cloath's.

15 And he said unto the People, Be ready against the third Day come not at your Wives.

16 And it came to pafs on the third Day in the Morning, that there were THUNDERS and LIGHTNINGS, and a thick CLOUD upon the MOUNT, and the VOICE of the Trumpet EXCEEDING LOUD; fo that all the People that was in the Camp TREMBLED.

17 And Mofes brought forth the People out of the Camp to meet with GOD, and they stood at the nether Part of the Mount.

18 And Mount SINAI

was altogether on a SMOKE, because the LORD DESCENDED upon it in FIRE: and the SMOKE thereof afcended as the Smoke of a Furnace, and the whole MoUNT QUAKED greatly.

19 And when the VOICE of the TRUMPET founded long, and waxed louder and louder, MOSES fpake, and GOD anfwered him by a Voice.

20 And the LORD came down upon Mount SINAI, on the Top of the Mount: and the LORD called Mofes up to the Top of the Mount, and Mofes went up.

21 And the LORD faid unto Mofes, Go down, charge the People, left they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them pe

rish.

22 And let the PRIESTS alfo which come near to the LORD, SANCTIFY themselves, left the LORD break forth upon them.

1 Heb. xii. 18 Ye are not come to and that BURNED with FIRE, nor unthe MOUNT that might be touched,

to BLACKNESS, and DARKNESS, and TEMPEST.

19 And the SOUND of a TRUMPET,

and the VOICE of WORDS, which VOICE they that heard, intreated that the WORD fhould not be spoken to them any more:

20 (For they could not ENDURE that which was COMMANDED. And if fo much as a Beaft touch the Mountain, it shall be ftoned, or thrust

through with a Dart.

21 And fo TERRIBLE was the Sight, and QUAKE) that Moses faid, I exceedingly FEAR

22 But YE are come unto Mount

LEM, and to an innumerable Com-
pany of ANGELS.

23 To the General ASSEMBLY and CHURCH of the FIRST BORN, which

are written in HEAVEN, and to GoD the JUDGE of all, and to the SPIRITS of just Men made PERFECT.

25 See that ye REFUSE not him that SPEAKETH: for if they ESCAPED not, who refused him that SPAKE On Earth, much more fhall not we ESCAPE, if we TURN away from him that SPEAKETH from HEAVEN :

26 Whofe VOICE then SHOOK the EARTH; but now he hath promised, 24 And

1 Cor. i. 21 For after that, in the Wisdom of God, the World by Wifdom knew not God, it pleased God by the Foolishness of preaching to fave them that believe.

me; I the LORD will answer him by myself. 8 And I will fet my Face against that Man, and will make him a Sign and a Proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of my People, and ye fhall know that I am the LORD.

Ezek viii 12 Then faid he unto me, Son of Man, haft thou feen what the Ancients of the Houfe of Ifrael do in the Dark, every Man in the CHAMBERS of his IMAGERY? for they fay, The LORD feeth us not, the LORD hath forfaken the Earth.

21 Because that when they knew GOD, they GLORIFIED him NOT as GOD, neither were thankful, but became VAIN in their IMAGINATIONS, and their foolish Heart was darkned.

25 Who CHANGED the TRUTH of GOD into a LIE, and WORSHIPPED the CREATURE more than the CREATOR.

III. 7 P Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in bain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his Name in vain,
