together passive therein, until, being quickened and renewed by the Holy Spirit, he is thereby enabled to answer this call, and to embrace the grace offered and conveyed in it/. III. Elect infants, dying in infancy, are regenerated and faved by Chrift through the Spiritm, who worketh when, and where, and how he pleasethn. So also are all other elect perfons, who are uncapable of being outwardly called by the ministry of the word o. mercy, he faved us by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the holy Ghoft. Eph. ii. 4. But God who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, v. 5. even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Chrift, (bygrace ye are faved) v. 8. For by grace are ye saved, through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God: v. 9. not of works, lest any man should boast. Rom. ix. 11. For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth. 1 Cor. ii. 14. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually difcerned. Rom. viii. 7. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not fubject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Eph. ii. 5. All that the Father giveth me, shall come to me; and him that cometh to me, I will in no wife caft out. Ezek. xxxvi. 27. Verily, verily I say unto you, The hour is and coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear, shall live. III. m Luke xviii. 15. And they brought unto him alfo infants, that he would touch them: but when his disciples saw it, they rebuked them: v. 16. But Jesus called them unto him, and faid, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of fuch is the kingdom of God. And Acts ii. 38. Then Peter faid unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of fins, and ye shall receive the gift of the holy Ghoft. v. 39. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. And John iii. 3. Jesus answered and faid unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot fee the kingdom of God. v. 5. Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. And I John v. 12. He that hath the Son, hath life, and he that hath not the Son of God, hath not life. And Rom. viii. 9. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dweil in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. (Compared together.) E 4 * Joha IV. Others not elected, although they may be called by the ministry of the word p, and may have fome common operations of the Spiritq; yet they never truly come to Christ, and therefore cannot be savedr: much less can men, not profeffing the Chriftian religion, be saved in any other way whatsoever, be they never so diligent to frame their lives according to the light of nature, and the law of that religion they do professs; and to affert and maintain, that they may, # John iii. 8. But he that received the feed into stony places, the fame is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it. v. 21. Yet hath he not root in Limself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution arifeth because of the word, by and by he is offended. Heb. vi. 4. For it is impossible for those who were once enlightned, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made is partakers of the holy Ghost, v. 5. And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come. John vi. 64. But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning, who they were that believed not, and who should betray him: v. 65. John viii, 24. I faid therefore unto you that you shall die in your fins: for if you believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your fins. Acts iv. 12. T CHAP. XI. Of Justification. HOSE whom God effectually calleth, he also freely justifieth a: not by infusing righteousness into them, but by pardoning their fins, and by accounting and accepting their persons as righteous: not for any thing wrought in them, or done by them, but for Christ's fake alone: not by imputing faith itself, the act of believing, or any other evangelical obedience, to them as their righteousness; but by imputing the obedience and fatisfaction of Christ unto themb, they receiving and resting on him and his righteousness by faith; preached unto you, let him be accursed. God in the world. * John iv. 22. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship; for salvation is of the Jews. John xvii. 3. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou haft fent, 12 John 9. Whosoever tranfgrefseth and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God: he that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. V. 10. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive. him not into your house, neither bid him God speed. v. 11. For he that biddeth him God speed, is partaker of his evil deeds. 1 Cor. xvi. 22. If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema, Maranatha, Gal. i. 6. I marvel, that ye are so soon removed from him that called you unto the grace of Chrift, unto another gospel. v. 7. Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. v. 8. But though we or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unte you, than that which we have I. a Rom. viii. 30. Moreover, whom he did predestinate, them he also called, and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he alfo glorified. Rom. iii. 24. Being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Jesus Chrift. b Rom. iv. 5. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteoufness. v. 6. Even as David alfo defcribeth the blessedness of the man unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, v. 7. faying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. v. 8. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute fin. 2 Cor. v. 19. To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trefpafses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. v. 21. For he hath made him to be fin for us, who knew no fin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. Rom. iii. faith; which faith they have not of themselves, it is the gift of God c. II. Faith, thus receiving and resting on Christ and his • righte 22. Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all, and upon all them that believe; for there is no difference. v. 24. Being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Jesus Christ; v. 25. Whom God hath fet forth to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remiflion of fins that are past, thro' the forbearance of God. v. 27. Where is boatting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. v. 28. Therefore we conclude, that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. Tit. iii. 5. Not by works of righteousness which we have * done, but according to his mercy he faved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the holy Ghoft: v. 7. That being ju'stified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Eph. i. 7. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of fins, according to the riches of his grace. Jer. xxiii. 6. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Ifrael shall dwell safely; and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. 1 Cor.i. 30. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wifdom, and righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. v. 31. That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord, Rom. v. 17. For if by one man's of fence, death reigned by one; much more they who receive abundance of grace, and of the gift of righteousness, shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ. v. 18. Therefore as by the offence of one, judgment came upon all men to condemnation: even so by the righteousnefs of one, the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. v. 19. For as by one man's disobedience, many were made sinners: so by the obedience of one, shall many be made righteous. c Acts x. 44. While Peter yet spake these words, the holy Ghost fell on all them who heard the word. Gal. ii. 16. Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Chrift; even we have believed in Jesus Chrift, that we might be justified by the faith of Chrift, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. Phil. iii. 9. And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith. Acts xiii. 38. Be it knowin unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of fins: v. 39. And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Mofes. Eph. ii. 7. That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace, in his kindness towards us, through Chrift Jesus. v. 8. For by grace are ye saved, through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. II. d John righteousness, is the alone instrument of justification d; yet is it not alone in the perfon justified, but is ever accompanied with all other faving graces, and is no dead faith, but worketh by love e : A III. Christ, by his obedience and death, did fully difcharge the debt of all those that are thus juftified, and did make a proper, real and full fatisfaction to his Father's justice in their behalff. Yet, in as much as he was given by II. d John i. 12. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the fons of God, even to them that believe on his name. Rom. iii. 28. Therefore we conclude, that a man is justified by faith, without the deeds of the law. Rom. v. 1. Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Chrift. James ii. 17. Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead being alone. v. 22. Seeft thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? v. 26. For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. Gal. v. 6. For in Jefus Chrift, neither circumcifion availeth any thing, nor uncircumcifion; but faith which worketh by love. III. f Rom. v. 8. But God commendeth his love towards us, in that while we were yet finners, Christ died for us. v. 9. Much more then being now justified by his blood, we shall be faved from wrath through him. v. 10. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son: much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life, v. 19. For as by one man's disobedience, many were made sinners: so by the obedience the of one, shall many be made righteous. I Tim. ii. 5. For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the man Chrift Jefus; v. 6. who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. Heb. x. 10. By the which will we are fanctified, through the offering of the body of Jesus Chrift once for all. v. 14. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are fanctified. Dan, ix. 24. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, to finith the tranfgreffion, and to make an end of fins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to feal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy. v. 26. And after threescore and two weeks, shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come, shall destroy the city and the fanctuary, and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war defolations are determined. Ifa. liii. 4. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. v. 5. But he was wounded for our tranfgreffions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and |
