TO EDWARD C. DELAVAN, ESQ.

SIR, In preparing an American edition of the following Essay, most highly valued by the friends of Temperance in Great Britain, I have thought it due to yourself, in view of the distinguished part you have taken in the Temperance cause, to lay it before you with an expression of respect for your character and gratitude for your services. Your munificent gratuity to the public, through the religious papers, of more than 26,000 copies of the Chapter on Ancient Wines, has already shown your estimation of the work. Could the Scriptures of truth be fully vindicated to the public eye, in their condemnation of wine as a mocker," and their presentation of the juice of the grape as a blessing and could all apologies, seemingly drawn from the Bible, for the use of alcoholic drinks be removed, the chief object of this work, and one on which your own mind has long been intently fixed, I see not but that the Temperance cause, now standing prominent as the cause of God and man, must soon become triumphant in the Church; and, if triumphant in the Church, triumphant also in the Christian and civilized world.

That your benevolent heart may be fully gratified in this matter, and that, in your deep devotion to this great cause, untiring perseverance, indomitable courage and pecuniary donations, unparalleled in any of the benevolent associations of the age, you may at last receive the divine approbation, and "shine as the stars for ever and ever," is the prayer of your friend and fellow-laborer,

THE AMERICAN EDITOR.
